BMW 8 Diesel Misfire: Reset Quantity Drift Error Help

Hi there! Experiencing some concerning issues with my 2020 BMW 8 diesel (59,902 KM). The engine's running rough and misfiring during drives, plus the check engine light is on. Diagnostic shows Reset Quantity Drift Compensation error. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Looking for recommendations on reliable mechanics who know their way around BMW diesels. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I actually went through something very similar with my 2017 BMW 5 Series diesel. Had the exact same symptoms, rough running, misfiring, and that dreaded check engine light. The Reset Quantity Drift Compensation error usually points to injector problems. In my case, the third cylinder injector was defective and needed replacement. It wasn't just a minor issue, faulty injectors can seriously damage the engine if left unchecked. The mechanic found metal debris in the fuel system, which confirmed the injector was deteriorating. They had to replace the problematic injector and clean out the fuel system. While they were at it, they also tested the other injectors to ensure they were functioning correctly. The whole process took about two days since they needed to code and calibrate the new injector to match the engine's specifications. From my experience, this isn't something you want to postpone. Injector issues on these engines need proper diagnosis and repair by someone who really knows BMW diesels. You might want to consider going to a specialist rather than a general mechanic.

Thanks for sharing that, it's really helpful to know I'm not alone with this problem. Your injector situation sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. Did you happen to remember what the total cost was for fixing everything? Also, just curious, have you had any other issues pop up since they did the repair? The part about metal debris in the fuel system is pretty concerning. Really appreciate the advice about seeing a specialist, definitely makes sense for something this complex.

Hey again! Glad I could help! Just wanted to update you, I went ahead and got it fixed at a BMW specialist last week. You'll be relieved to know it sorted out that Reset Quantity Drift Compensation error completely. My car's running smooth as silk now! The total damage was 515 € for the injector replacement and system cleaning. Money well spent though, no more rough running or misfiring issues. And to answer your question about other problems, nope, absolutely nothing has cropped up since the repair. The engine's performing beautifully. I know these repairs can be pricey, but honestly, it's worth getting it done right. My mechanic explained that neglecting injector problems can lead to way more expensive engine damage down the road. Plus, the peace of mind knowing everything's working properly is priceless. Just make sure whoever you choose knows their stuff with BMW diesels. These engines are pretty sophisticated, and you want someone who understands all their quirks and complexities. Let me know how it goes when you get yours sorted!

Thanks so much for the follow-up! Actually, I took your advice and got my car fixed yesterday at a BMW specialist. You were spot on, it was indeed an injector issue, just like yours. What a relief to know that the final cost was similar to what you paid. My repair came to around 530 €, including the system cleaning. The mechanic was fantastic, really knew what they were talking about and walked me through everything they were doing. The best part? My car's running perfectly now! No more rough starts or that annoying misfiring. The check engine light is finally off, and the engine purrs like it's supposed to. It's amazing what a difference a good mechanic makes compared to my previous experiences. Really appreciate you sharing your story, it gave me the confidence to get this sorted properly instead of putting it off. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront really does save money in the long run!
