BMW 8 Mirror Heating and Auto-Dim Failure Solutions

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2019 BMW 8 (100k km, gasoline). The heated mirrors stopped working completely, and the auto-dimming feature is dead too. Scanner shows an error code for this. Had some sketchy experiences with mechanics lately, so I'm hesitant to just drive to any shop. Has anyone dealt with similar mirror issues on their BMW 8? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would appreciate any insights on trustworthy fixes. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 6 Series last winter. The heated mirrors and auto-dimming stopped working suddenly. After checking at the garage, it turned out to be a faulty wiring connection in the mirror housing, the cables had worked loose and weren't making proper contact anymore. It wasn't a major repair, just needed to reconnect and secure the wiring properly. The technician also applied some dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. The whole thing was sorted in about an hour. From my experience, these mirror issues are usually electrical connections rather than the actual mirror components failing. I'd suggest having a qualified BMW technician look at it, as they'll know exactly where to check for loose connections in these models. If you get the same diagnostic code I had, it's likely the same wiring issue and not something more serious with the mirror units themselves.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the mirrors! That's really helpful to know it was just a wiring issue. Sounds like you got it sorted pretty quickly. Mind if I ask roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, just curious, have you had any other electrical glitches with the mirrors since they fixed it? I'm hoping mine is something similarly straightforward to fix.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions about the repair costs and how it's been working since. The fix was actually pretty straightforward, just like I thought, it was a wiring problem. Got it sorted at the shop and it came to 95 € to repair the faulty cable connection. Money well spent, if you ask me! And I've got good news, since getting it fixed, both the heating and auto-dimming features have been working perfectly. Not a single problem! It's such a relief, especially during those cold mornings when you really need those heated mirrors. Really sounds like you're dealing with the same issue I had. A loose connection can cause both features to fail at once, but it's usually not too complicated to fix. Just make sure you get a qualified tech who knows these BMW systems well, they'll know exactly where to look for these common electrical quirks. Let me know how it goes when you get yours checked out!

Thanks for all that detailed info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were spot on about the wiring, turns out I had almost the exact same problem. The connection had come loose and was causing both features to fail. The repair was quick, only took about 45 minutes. Cost me a bit more than yours at 120 €, but I'm just glad it wasn't something more serious. The mechanic I found was really thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong before fixing it. Definitely feeling better about the whole situation now. Just tested both features on my drive home and everything's working perfectly again. Such a relief! And hey, thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me understand what I was dealing with before heading to the shop. Best advice I've gotten in a while!
