BMW 8 Multiple Warning Lights & Heavy Steering Issue

Hi all! Need help with my 2021 BMW 8 showing multiple warning lights (ESP, ABS, brake) simultaneously. The steering wheel shakes and feels much heavier than normal. I suspect it might be related to the steering angle sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2019 BMW 7 Series. I'd say I have low experience with car repairs, mostly just basic maintenance stuff. Last year, my car started showing those exact same warning lights, and the steering felt really weird, heavy and shaky. Took it to my trusted workshop, and it turned out to be a faulty coding in the steering angle sensor. The fix wasn't too complex, but it needed special diagnostic equipment. Cost me around 195 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. Can you share more details about your car? Like the specific model (840i, M850i, etc.) and if you've had any recent work done on the steering or suspension? This could help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have the 840i with 45788 KM on the clock, and it's still on the original programming from my last service. Your situation sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing right now. Good to hear it wasn't a major mechanical issue in your case. Did your mechanic mention if this is a common problem with these models? I'm hoping it's just the sensor coding like in your case, rather than something more serious with the steering system itself. By the way, did you notice if the problem got worse during turns, or was it consistent all the time?

Hey again! Actually, my mechanic did mention this is a somewhat known issue with our BMWs, especially in the newer models with all the advanced electronics. In my case, the symptoms were pretty consistent, but I noticed they got a bit more pronounced during sharper turns, kind of like the car got confused about the wheel position. Since you've got the 840i with similar mileage to what mine had when the issue occurred (I was around 42000 KM), it's looking more and more like the same problem. The good news is that if it is indeed the sensor coding, it's more of an annoyance than a serious mechanical issue. Just a heads up though, while my car was in the shop, the mechanic did a full diagnostic scan just to rule out any other potential issues. Might be worth asking your mechanic to do the same, just to be on the safe side. These newer BMWs can be a bit tricky with their integrated systems, where one small issue can trigger multiple warning lights. Have you noticed any other unusual behavior besides the steering and warning lights? In my case, I also had occasional traction control acting up, but that all went away after the sensor was recoded.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really reassuring to hear it's a known issue. Yeah, I've noticed the same thing with the symptoms getting worse during turns, and come to think of it, my traction control has been a bit wonky too. Definitely sounds like we had the same problem. I'll take your advice and ask for a full diagnostic scan when I take it in. Better to check everything while they're at it. It's such a relief to know it might just be a coding issue rather than something major with the steering system. The repair cost you mentioned seems reasonable too, especially for a BMW. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped calm my nerves about this whole situation. I'll probably book it in for service next week. Thanks again for all your help!
