BMW 8 Power Seat Failure: Cost & Solutions Needed

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2019 BMW 8 (55k km, gas engine). The power seats are completely frozen, can't adjust them manually or with the memory settings. The computer's showing an error code too. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar electric seat issues in their BMW? What was the cause and how much did repairs cost? Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 6 Series last winter. The power seats completely stopped responding, along with the memory function. Turned out the wiring harness under the seat had some damaged cables, and there was a loose connection at the main control module. The garage traced the problem using diagnostic equipment. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness and checking all the connectors. It wasn't a major mechanical issue, but it needed proper attention from someone who knows BMWs well. The job took about half a day to complete. My suggestion would be to have it checked at a certified BMW specialist. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced, and if it's the same problem, it's better to fix it sooner rather than later to prevent potential damage to the seat motors. Best of luck getting it sorted.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Good to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this. I'm planning to take it to a specialist as you suggested, those seat motors aren't cheap to replace if they get damaged. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it? Cheers!

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting it fixed at the specialist, everything's been working perfectly, not a single problem with the seats for over a year now. The total cost came to 95 € for fixing what turned out to be a faulty cable connection. Much cheaper than I initially feared! The repair was pretty straightforward once they identified the issue. The mechanic mentioned these problems are fairly common in BMWs, and it's usually just a matter of finding the bad connection and sorting it out. I can now adjust my seat positions and use the memory settings without any problems. Honestly, it was worth every penny to get it properly diagnosed and fixed. Definitely beats the hassle of manually adjusting the seat or worrying about potential damage to the motors. If your issue is similar to what I had, you should be back in business pretty quickly! Let me know how it goes with your repair!

Just wanted to update everyone, got my car back from the specialist today! You were right about getting it checked out quickly. The mechanic found a similar issue with the wiring harness, though in my case there was also a small fault in the control module. Total bill came to 150 €, more than what you paid, but still way better than replacing the entire seat system! The whole repair took about 3 hours. Got to say, watching the seats move smoothly again is pretty satisfying! The specialist also checked the rest of the electrical systems while they were at it, which was a nice bonus. Definitely feeling better about taking it to them rather than my old mechanic. Thanks again for the advice. Really saved me from potentially bigger problems down the road. Everything's working perfectly now, all power adjustments and memory settings back to normal. What a relief!
