BMW 8 Series Sunblind Stuck, Error Code Mystery Solved

Sunblind no longer retracts and extends

Sunblind gets stuck in one position

Fault stored

Hey all! Having trouble with the sunblind on my 2023 BMW 8. It's completely stuck in position and won't move either way. I've checked and there's an error code stored in the system. Before taking it to the dealer, has anyone dealt with this issue? What was the actual problem and how did your workshop fix it? Really interested in hearing about your repair experiences to get an idea of what I'm dealing with. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW 7 Series (I have some basic car experience, mostly maintenance stuff). The sunblind motor just died on me completely, super frustrating! Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed it as a defective motor unit. The repair took about 2 hours, and I ended up paying around 330 Euro for the whole thing, parts and labor included. Before we dive deeper into potential solutions, could you tell me if you're hearing any unusual noises when trying to operate the sunblind? Also, which error code exactly are you getting? Some of these codes can tell us a lot about what's going on. I've dealt with BMWs for a while (also owned a 5 Series), and these sunblind issues can be tricky. Let me know those details, and I might be able to share more specific insights about what you're dealing with.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got 167976 KM on my BMW, and I did notice a slight grinding noise when trying to operate the blind. It started right after my latest service actually. The error code I'm getting is B4F812, and from what I understand, it seems motor-related. The price you mentioned sounds reasonable, at least it's not as bad as I feared! Did your workshop mention anything about this being a common issue with newer BMWs? Just trying to figure out if this is something I should expect to happen again down the road.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your BMW. Yeah, that grinding noise you mentioned, I had exactly the same thing with my 7 Series before the motor completely gave up. It's interesting that yours started after a service though, mine just out of nowhere decided to act up one day. That error code B4F812 is definitely related to the motor, just like what happened with mine. When I talked to my workshop about it, they actually mentioned they've seen quite a few similar cases in newer BMWs, especially in the 7 and 8 Series. The mechanic told me it's not super common, but it's not rare either, something about the motor units having a certain weak point. The good news is that since they replaced my motor unit, it's been working perfectly for the past 18 months with no issues whatsoever. My mechanic did recommend checking the sunblind operation during regular services to catch any potential issues early. They said listening for those grinding noises is actually a pretty good warning sign. One thing I should mention, make sure they check the tracks while they're replacing the motor. In my case, they found some debris in there that could've caused problems later. Might be worth asking them to take a look at that too while they're in there.

Thanks for all that detailed info! That's really helpful to know about the debris in the tracks, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. It's actually a bit reassuring to hear I'm not the only one who's dealt with this issue in a newer BMW. Good to know yours has been working well for 18 months after the fix too, that's encouraging! I think I'll go ahead and book it in with my workshop this week. The grinding noise is getting a bit worse, and I'd rather deal with it now before it completely fails. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what to expect. I'll make sure they do a thorough check of both the motor and the tracks. Maybe I'll post an update once it's fixed to help out anyone else who runs into the same problem!

Let our mechanics help you!
