Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful actually, I've been worried it might be the entire shock system needing replacement, so hearing it could just be the wiring harness is a relief. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Just want to know what to expect.

Hey! Great news, I can definitely give you an update! After getting it fixed, my suspension has been working perfectly. The ride is back to being super smooth and comfortable, just like it should be. The damping adjustment fault hasn't shown up since, so it looks like that dodgy cable connection was definitely the culprit. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the cable and connector issue. Much better than what I was initially worried about paying! The mechanic just needed to sort out that faulty connection and recalibrate the system, no major parts replacement needed. I've put about 5000 km on the car since the repair and haven't had a single warning light or problem with the suspension. The difference in ride quality is like night and day compared to before. Let me know how your repair goes, fingers crossed it's something similarly straightforward for your 8 Series!

Thanks for following up! You won't believe it, I just got back from the mechanic today. Turned out you were spot on! It was indeed a wiring issue, though in my case it was a bit pricier at 150 € because they had to replace the entire connector assembly. The mechanic showed me the corroded bits and explained everything clearly, way better than my previous guy who'd just mumble and hand me a bill. The car's running like a dream now, and that horrible warning light is finally gone. Such a relief it wasn't the entire suspension system! Just took it for a proper drive and the difference is incredible. No more feeling like I'm riding in a tractor! Guess I was lucky to catch it before it caused any serious damage to other parts. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me know what to expect and not panic about potentially massive repair costs. Thanks again.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 7 Series diesel last month. The damping adjustment error turned out to be a faulty cable connection at the shock absorber control module. The mechanic found corroded wiring harness connectors that weren't properly sending signals between the control unit and the suspension components. It was causing the system to default to the firmest setting, making every bump feel brutal. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness and recalibrating the system. While not cheap, it wasn't as serious as replacing the entire shock absorbers, which I initially feared. The whole job took about 4 hours at the garage. Just make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW adaptive suspension systems. The diagnostic equipment needs to be specific to these models to properly reset everything after the repair. Hope this helps.
