Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness being the culprit rather than the sensor itself. I've got my car booked in next week for a second opinion, and I'll definitely ask them to check the connections first. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks with the system?

Hey there! Glad to give you an update on my situation. After getting the repair done, I'm happy to report that the anti-theft system has been working perfectly, no more unusual alarms or system failures at all. The mechanic found exactly what they suspected: a dodgy cable connection to the tilt sensor that needed fixing. The total bill came to 95 € for sorting out the faulty cable connection. Much cheaper than replacing the entire sensor unit, which is what another garage had suggested! It was basically just labor costs plus a small charge for materials to repair and seal the connection properly. I've been keeping an eye on it since the repair, and honestly, it's been running like clockwork for the past few weeks. No quirks, no false alarms, nothing. Just works exactly as it should. I'd definitely recommend getting them to check those connections first, could save you a decent chunk of money rather than jumping straight to replacing parts. Curious to hear how your second opinion goes next week. Let me know what they find!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Just got back from my mechanic visit and you won't believe it, my issue was almost identical to yours! The mechanic found corroded wiring connections near the sensor. The whole repair, including cleaning and resealing the connections, came to about 120 €. The funny part was watching the mechanic's face when he discovered the real problem. He kept saying how common these wiring issues are becoming in BMWs of our age. Initially, they quoted me 500 € for a new sensor unit, so I'm really glad I got that second opinion. Been driving for three days now and no more unusual alarms or system failures. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, saved me both time and money! Never would've thought to specifically ask about the wiring if you hadn't mentioned it. Shows how important it is to share these experiences with fellow car owners! Guess I'll keep my fingers crossed that this fixes it for good, but so far, everything's working perfectly. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Having experienced a similar issue with my 2013 BMW 3 Series diesel, I can relate to your situation. The tilt sensor gave me trouble last month, but it turned out the main problem was actually a loose connection in the wiring harness that connects to the sensor. My symptoms were identical, unusual alarm triggers and system failures. The mechanic found corrosion on the connector pins and damage to the surrounding insulation. Got it fixed by cleaning the connections, replacing the damaged wiring section, and properly sealing the connector. While not a major repair in terms of components, it's definitely something that needs proper attention as it affects the entire anti-theft system. In my case, the original diagnosis suggested replacing the whole sensor unit, but a thorough inspection revealed it was just the connection issue. Would recommend getting a second opinion, specifically asking them to check the wiring and connections before replacing any parts. The tilt sensor itself is rarely the culprit.
