BMW i3 Error Code Mystery: Driver Seeks Help

Error message in the speedometer

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2018 BMW i3 Hybrid (181,599 km). Getting an error message on the speedometer display and there's a stored error code. Think it's something about an incomplete system check. Had a pretty bad experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar issues on their i3? Would love to hear about your experiences and if you can recommend what to look out for when getting this fixed. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Yes, I've dealt with something similar on my 2015 BMW i8 Hybrid. Last month, I got the same system check incomplete warning. Turned out the battery management system needed recalibration, and there was a fault in one of the high-voltage sensors. Had it checked at the garage, and they found that the hybrid system was starting to show signs of voltage inconsistency. This isn't something you want to ignore, it's pretty serious if left unchecked. The technician had to run a full diagnostic reset and replace one faulty sensor. They also updated the control module software. These hybrid systems are complex, and you'll want someone who specifically knows BMW hybrids. Make sure whoever works on it has proper hybrid certification. The job took about a day and a half to complete on my car. While it wasn't a cheap fix, it was worth getting it sorted properly rather than risking bigger issues down the line. Hope this helps with your decision-making!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'll definitely look for a certified hybrid specialist. Just wondering, would you mind sharing roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair? Really appreciate the help!

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. Just wanted to update you on my i8's situation since you asked. The best news is that everything has been running perfectly smooth since I had it looked at. The System readiness check incomplete warning completely disappeared after they worked on it. The even better news, which might make you happy, is that it ended up not costing me anything at all! When they hooked up the OBD2 reader and ran diagnostics, they found it was actually just a software glitch that needed resetting. Much simpler than what I initially feared about sensors and battery management systems. From my experience, these hybrid BMWs can sometimes throw these warnings that seem scary but turn out to be minor issues. Just make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing with hybrid systems. Since the fix, my i8's been running like a dream, no warning lights, no error messages, nothing. Let me know how it goes with yours! Always happy to share more about my experience if you need it.

Just wanted to update everyone! Finally got my i3 checked out today. After reading about your experience, I found a certified hybrid specialist and honestly, what a difference! The mechanic hooked up their diagnostic tools and found out it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. Turns out I needed a system reset and a minor sensor adjustment. The whole thing took about three hours, and the bill was pretty reasonable, way less than I expected after hearing horror stories from others. Car's running great now, no more error messages or warning lights. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked by someone who knows these hybrid systems. Sometimes it just takes someone sharing their experience to give you that extra confidence to get things sorted. You saved me from a lot of unnecessary worry!
