BMW i3 Hybrid's O2 Sensor Warning: Owner Seeks Help

Hey there! My 2018 BMW i3 Hybrid (37k km) is giving me a headache. The check engine light popped on, and I'm burning more fuel than usual. Had it scanned and it points to the O2 sensor heater. My last mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with this issue? What was the repair cost and would you recommend any reliable mechanics who know their way around hybrid BMWs? Need some honest feedback. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I actually faced a similar issue with my 2015 BMW i8 Hybrid last year. The O2 sensor heater problem isn't uncommon in these models. When mine acted up, it started with the check engine light and increased fuel consumption, just like yours. The problem turned out to be a faulty connection between the sensor and the wiring harness, rather than the sensor itself. The connector had corroded over time, causing intermittent signals. The mechanic cleaned the connection points and replaced the damaged wiring sections. It wasn't a major repair, but it needed to be done right since the O2 sensor directly affects the fuel mixture and emissions control. The whole repair took about 2 hours. I'd strongly suggest getting it fixed soon because running with a malfunctioning O2 sensor can damage your catalytic converter, which would be a much more serious issue. What's important is finding a mechanic who specializes in BMW hybrids, they'll know exactly what to look for and how to properly diagnose whether it's just a connection issue or if the sensor itself needs replacement. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness issue, sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Cheers!

Hey again! Glad to give you an update! After seeing a mechanic who actually knows BMW hybrids, it turned out to be exactly what I suspected, just a dodgy cable connection to the O2 sensor. Got it fixed last week for 95 €, which wasn't too bad at all. Much better than having to replace the entire sensor! The car's running like a dream now. Fuel consumption is back to normal, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. Haven't had any other issues pop up since the repair. The mechanic did a thorough job checking all the connections while they were at it, which gave me peace of mind. Really glad I helped point you in the right direction with the wiring harness issue. These hybrid systems can be tricky, but sometimes it's just these simple connection problems that cause all the drama. My i8's been absolutely spot on since the fix, no quirks, no problems, just smooth sailing! Let me know how yours works out after the repair!

Hey! Just wanted to give you an update on my BMW situation. Finally got it sorted! You were right about finding a specialist, made all the difference. Took it to a new mechanic who actually listened to what I was saying about the symptoms. Turned out my issue was a bit different from yours. The O2 sensor itself was shot and needed replacing. Repair bill came to about 300€ including labor, which stung a bit but honestly could've been worse. The mechanic walked me through everything they did, which I really appreciated. Been driving it for a few days now and what a difference! The engine's running smoother, and I'm already noticing I'm using less fuel. Such a relief to see that check engine light gone too. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. Thanks again for your help, having your experience to compare with made me feel more confident about getting it fixed. Sometimes you just need that push to get things sorted, you know? Take care!
