BMW i3 Hybrid Jerking: Throttle Valve Warning Signs
Summary of the thread
A BMW i3 Hybrid owner reported issues with engine jerking, sluggish acceleration, and increased fuel consumption, suspecting a throttle valve problem. Another user shared a similar experience with a BMW i8 Hybrid, where the issue was traced to a defective accelerator pedal module. The solution involved replacing the pedal module, which resolved the jerking and starting issues, restoring normal fuel consumption. The original poster followed this advice, had the pedal module replaced, and confirmed that the repair resolved all symptoms, improving the car's performance significantly.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Really helpful to know it was the pedal module in your case. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you had to pay for the whole thing? And has everything stayed good since the repair, or have you noticed any other quirks? Would love to know as I'm trying to budget for this repair and want to make sure I fix it right the first time.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your question about the costs. Yes, I remember exactly, it was 205 € for the complete fix of the defective accelerator pedal module. And I'm happy to report that since getting it sorted, my i8 has been running like a dream! No more jerking, no more starting issues, nothing. The mechanic actually confirmed it was indeed the throttle valve causing all those annoying symptoms, and once they fixed that, everything fell back into place. The acceleration is smooth again, and the fuel consumption is back to what it should be. Money well spent, if you ask me! I know these repairs can be a bit nerve-wracking, but honestly, once you get it fixed properly, you'll feel the difference right away. My car feels just like new again, it's been about 8 months since the repair, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. Just make sure you get it done at a place that really knows their hybrid systems. Let me know how it goes when you get yours fixed!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today and you were spot on. Took your advice and found a shop specializing in hybrid systems. Turned out my issue was also the accelerator pedal module! The repair cost was a bit higher than yours, around 280 for parts and labor, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The difference is like night and day. My car's running super smooth now, no more jerking or weird starts in the morning. The mechanic was really thorough and explained everything. Took them about 2.5 hours to complete the job. They also did a quick system check to make sure everything else was working properly. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. The fuel consumption is back to normal, and the car feels like new again. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right decision!

Had the exact same symptoms with my 2018 BMW i8 Hybrid last winter. The jerking and inconsistent acceleration turned out to be a defective accelerator pedal module. The sensors inside weren't communicating properly with the engine control unit. During my garage visit, they ran diagnostics and found error codes pointing to the pedal module. They had to replace the entire unit as these modules can't be repaired. It was a serious issue since it affected both the electric and combustion systems, plus it's a safety concern when you can't properly control acceleration. The fix wasn't super complex, took about 2 hours for the replacement and programming. Car's been running smoothly since then, no more jerking or starting issues. The fuel consumption went back to normal too. I'd suggest getting it checked soon since these symptoms typically get worse over time.
