BMW i3 Hybrid: Multiple Issues Point to Injector Problems

Hey all BMW i3 hybrid owners! My 2022 model is acting up with multiple issues including rough starts, high fuel usage, and power loss. Engine idles roughly and sometimes stalls. Failed emissions too. I suspect faulty injector nozzles might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and workshop solutions. Trying to pinpoint the exact issue before taking it in. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with car maintenance, and I actually faced something very similar with my 2020 BMW i8. My also owns a BMW X5, so I'm quite familiar with the brand. What you're describing sounds exactly like what I dealt with last summer, rough idling, poor fuel economy, and those annoying stalls. Turned out my injection valve was seriously gunked up. Took it to my regular workshop, and they did a thorough cleaning of the injection system. Total bill came to 515 Euro, but it was worth every penny. Car's been running like new since then. Before jumping to solutions though, could you share: Current mileage? When did you last service it? Does the check engine light come on? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for the response! I just hit 138393 KM and had my last service about 2 months ago. The check engine light has been flickering on and off, and your experience sounds spot-on with what I'm dealing with. That valve cleaning solution seems promising, definitely better than having to replace the whole injection system. Did you notice any warning signs before the problems got serious? The cost seems reasonable if it fixes these issues. I'll probably give my mechanic a call tomorrow and mention this, sounds like it could save me from bigger headaches down the road.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember those symptoms all too well with my i8. Before the problems got really bad, I noticed my car was getting harder to start in the mornings, it would crank longer than usual. Also, my fuel consumption started creeping up gradually, but I ignored it thinking it was just my driving style. Based on your mileage and what you're describing, it's almost certainly the same issue I had. That flickering check engine light is exactly what mine was doing too. Looking back, I wish I'd acted sooner because driving with a dirty injection system can cause other problems. One tip from my experience, ask your mechanic to check all the injectors, not just clean them. Sometimes they find one or two that are more clogged than others. In my case, two were pretty bad while the others were just moderately dirty. They cleaned all of them anyway, just to be safe. Since your last service was only 2 months ago, mention this to your mechanic as well. Sometimes these issues can start showing up pretty quickly if you've got contaminated fuel or something similar. After my cleaning, I started using better quality fuel and fuel system cleaner every few months, hasn't given me any trouble since. Keep us posted on what your mechanic finds! Always good to share experiences so others can learn from them too.

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's super helpful knowing someone else has dealt with this exact problem. I'll definitely ask about checking all the injectors, not just cleaning them. Good point about the contaminated fuel too, I've been trying to save money by using cheaper gas stations lately, which might explain why these issues popped up so soon after my service. I've already called my mechanic and got an appointment for tomorrow morning. Mentioned everything we discussed, and they seemed to agree that the injection system is the likely culprit. They quoted me roughly the same price range you mentioned, which makes me feel better about the whole thing. Fingers crossed it's just a thorough cleaning job needed and nothing more serious! Thanks again for taking the time to help out, it's great having experienced owners to bounce these problems off of. I'll definitely switch to better quality fuel after this and start using those system cleaners you mentioned. Really hoping to get my i3 running smoothly again!
