BMW i3 Parking Sensor Malfunction Causes Endless Beeping

Park distance control without function

|

Fault stored

Hi there! Need some advice about my 2020 BMW i3 Hybrid (152k km). The parking sensors stopped working completely, and I get this annoying constant beep whenever I put it in reverse. The diagnostic shows there's an error code stored. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar parking sensor issues? What was the fix, and how much did it cost? Would really appreciate some insight before I decide where to take it. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i8 Hybrid last month. Initially thought it was serious, but turned out to be just a connector problem. The constant beeping was identical to what you're describing, super annoying. Took it to the garage and they found that moisture had gotten into one of the rear sensor connectors, causing corrosion. They had to clean the connection points and replace one damaged wire harness. The fix wasn't too complex, but accessing the area behind the bumper was time-consuming. Not a major repair overall, but definitely needs proper diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact sensor that's causing the error code. Better to get it checked soon though, driving without working parking sensors isn't ideal, especially with these newer BMWs. Hope this helps with your decision making. Let me know if you need any other info.

Hey again! Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? And has everything been working properly since then? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect cost-wise before I take it in. Really don't want any surprises at the garage this time around. Cheers!

Hey! Yes, absolutely, everything's been working perfectly since I got it fixed! Glad I could help you out. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable and connection. Pretty reasonable considering how annoying that constant beeping was! The mechanic actually showed me the corroded connector they replaced, it was in pretty bad shape. Since the repair, the parking sensors have been spot-on, no more error messages or that irritating beeping sound. The whole system works just like new again. For what it's worth, I think you're making the right call getting it checked out. These sensor issues usually don't fix themselves and tend to get worse over time. And trust me, the relief of having working parking sensors again is totally worth the cost! Let me know how it goes when you get yours fixed. Hope you get the same good results I did! Cheers!

Thanks so much for all the info! Actually, I bit the bullet and took it to a new mechanic yesterday. You were right about the connector, turns out mine had the same issue with corrosion. What a relief it wasn't something more serious! The fix cost me about the same as yours, and they sorted it out pretty quickly. The constant beeping was driving me nuts, so it's such a pleasure to reverse now without that annoying sound. The sensors are all working perfectly again. Funny how sometimes we worry about these things being major repairs when it's just a simple fix. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the decision to get it checked out! Take care!
