BMW i4 Display Glitch: Infotainment System Going Dark?

Hi everyone! My 2023 BMW i4 has developed some electrical gremlins. The infotainment display flickers and sometimes goes completely black, plus the audio system is dead. The car's diagnostic system shows an error code. I suspect it's related to the audio system, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone encountered similar issues? I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences and how your workshop resolved it. What was the actual problem and the fix? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and actually faced a similar issue with my 2021 BMW iX3 last year. The symptoms were nearly identical, flickering display and no sound. I took it to my workshop and they diagnosed a faulty main display unit that was causing both the screen and audio problems. The repair involved replacing the entire display module and recalibrating the system. Cost me around 725 Euro, but it fixed everything completely, no issues since then. Before going to the workshop, I tried the basic troubleshooting like system resets, but nothing worked. These new electric BMWs (I also considered the i4 before getting the iX3) have complex electronics, and sometimes only professional diagnostic tools can pinpoint the exact problem. Could you share your error code? That would help compare if it's the same issue I had. Also, did you notice any other electrical quirks before this started happening? Feel free to ask if you need more details about my repair experience!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's a bit different, I've covered 161452 KM and just started experiencing these issues about a week after my last service. I also tried the system reset trick, but no luck there. The error code I'm getting is E-5501, which seems different from what you encountered. It's pretty frustrating since the car is still relatively new, being a 2023 model. The weird thing is that everything works fine when the weather's cold in the morning, but starts acting up as the day progresses. I'll probably take it to the workshop next week, but wanted to check if anyone else had similar temperature-related symptoms. Really hope it won't cost as much as your repair did!

Hey again! You know what? That temperature-related behavior actually rings a bell! My iX3 did something similar before the complete failure, worked fine in the morning but got worse throughout the day. I didn't mention it earlier, but looking back, this was definitely a warning sign I should've paid more attention to. The error code is different from what I had (mine was E-5302), but these temperature-sensitive issues often point to connection problems. After my display unit was replaced, the technician mentioned they found some loose connections that were probably expanding with heat. Based on what you're describing, especially with it happening right after a service, I'd suggest having them check the connections first. Could save you some money compared to my full display replacement. Honestly wish I'd caught mine earlier when it was showing these temperature-related symptoms, might have been a simpler fix. Keep us posted on what they find! Really curious if it's similar to what I experienced, even though the error codes are different. These new electric models can be tricky with their electronics, but they're worth the occasional headache!

Thanks everyone for your helpful responses! I just got back from the workshop, and wanted to close the loop on this. Turns out it was actually a much simpler fix than expected. The technicians found that during my last service, one of the main harness connectors wasn't properly secured. The heat was causing it to expand and lose connection throughout the day, which explained the temperature-related symptoms. Total repair cost was just under 200 Euro for diagnostics and fixing the connection, way better than I feared after hearing about the display unit replacement! The tech also mentioned they've seen similar issues in other i4s, so they're now double-checking all connections during regular services. Car's been running perfectly for the past few days, no more flickering or audio issues, even during hot afternoons. Really glad I asked here before assuming the worst. Just shows how sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one! Thanks again for all your help and sharing your experiences. Really helped me understand what to look out for and what to tell the workshop!
