BMW i4 Multiple Issues: Air Pump & Engine Problems

Hey everyone, need help with my 2020 BMW i4 that's acting up. Getting multiple issues like engine stalling, jerking, check engine light, and the secondary air pump either runs too long or doesn't work at all. I suspect it might be related to the air valve, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to know what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Any tips or shared experiences would be really helpful.

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2018 BMW iX3 (I have some basic car maintenance experience). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through last winter. Mine turned out to be a faulty hose connection between the pump and valve. Had it fixed at my regular workshop, they quickly diagnosed it and replaced the connection. Cost me around 175 Euro, but it solved all those issues: the stalling, jerking, and that annoying check engine light all disappeared. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: How many miles/kilometers on your i4? When did these symptoms first appear? Any unusual sounds from the engine bay? I know BMW's electric range pretty well (also owned an i3), so happy to help you troubleshoot this further!

Thanks for the detailed response! Just had my service done last month at 121514 KM. The symptoms actually started showing up about two weeks ago. And yes, there's definitely a whirring noise coming from the front, especially when I first start the car. It sounds different from the usual electric motor hum I'm used to hearing. I was thinking of taking it to a workshop, but wanted to get some community insights first to better understand what I might be dealing with. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, actually makes me feel better knowing it might just be a connection issue rather than something major with the motor itself.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those extra details about your i4. You know, those symptoms and especially that whirring noise you mentioned really remind me of what I experienced with my iX3. Based on the mileage you shared and the timing of the symptoms, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I dealt with. Quick follow-up from my earlier response, after I had that hose connection fixed, I actually noticed that regular maintenance of the air system connections became super important. I started doing basic checks every few months, and it's prevented any repeat issues. Trust me, it's way better than dealing with those scary engine jerks again! The whirring noise you described is particularly telling, it's different from that regular EV sound we're used to, right? That's exactly what tipped off my mechanic to check the connections first. Since your car is still relatively new and you just had service done, it might even be worth checking if this could be covered under warranty. I'd suggest getting it checked soon though, driving with these symptoms isn't great for the system in the long run. When I ignored it initially (for about a week), the jerking got noticeably worse. Let me know what you find out, I'm curious if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for all this information, you've really helped put my mind at ease! I'll definitely get it checked out this week. You're absolutely right about not waiting too long; I've noticed the jerking has gotten a bit more noticeable even over these past few days. I've already called a certified BMW workshop and booked an appointment for tomorrow morning. I'll make sure to mention the hose connection issue you experienced, especially since the symptoms are so similar. And good tip about the regular maintenance checks, I'll definitely start doing those once this is fixed. I'll update this thread once I know what the actual problem was, in case anyone else runs into similar issues with their i4. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice!

Hi - could you help me understand which hose we are talking about. ? Mine does the same and going to drive on vacation in 1 week…. The dealer says there is nothing he can do if the engine lamp is not on ? The car is from 20204

Start by checking the hose connections related to the secondary air pump and air valve. These are often located near the front of the engine bay. Look for any signs of wear, cracks, or loose fittings. If you're planning a long drive, it's crucial to address this issue to avoid potential breakdowns. If you're unsure, consider having a mechanic inspect it before your trip for safety. Let me know if you need further guidance or have any updates.
