BMW i4 Multiple Sensor Failures, Rain Sensor Culprit?

Need help: BMW i4 2020 multiple sensor issues, Rain-light sensor suspected Having trouble with my i4, several functions stopped working simultaneously including auto wipers, auto headlights, speedo dimming, and getting error codes. Thinking it might be the rain-light sensor. Has anyone dealt with this issue? What was the fix? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and workshop solutions.

Hey there! I have some experience working on EVs (medium experience level). Had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW iX3 last year, multiple sensor malfunctions happened at once. Turned out there were bubbles forming under the gel pad where the rain-light sensor sits on the windshield, causing all those exact symptoms you're describing. Took it to my regular workshop, they had to carefully remove and replace the gel pad and recalibrate the sensor. Total cost was 62 Euro and fixed everything perfectly. No issues since then. Before I share more details, what year exactly is your i4? Are you seeing any physical signs around the sensor area like bubbling or discoloration? Also, which specific error codes are you getting? That would help confirm if it's the same problem I dealt with.

Thanks for the input! Experiencing the exact same symptoms on my 2020 i4 (148981 KM on the clock). The error codes are identical, B7CB31 and B7CB32. Just checked the sensor area and noticed slight bubbling under the gel pad, just like you described. Did your workshop mention if this is a common issue? I'm hoping for a similar quick fix, as everything was working perfectly fine until last week. Been hesitant to use automatic features since these errors started popping up. Definitely planning to get it looked at during my next service.

Hey again! Thanks for confirming those details. Looks like we're dealing with the exact same issue I had. Yes, when I took my car in, my mechanic mentioned they've seen this problem quite frequently on our model years, apparently it's more common in BMWs from 2018-2020, especially the electric models. Those error codes (B7CB31 and B7CB32) are exactly what I got too. The bubbling under the gel pad is a dead giveaway, that's what causes the sensor to lose proper contact with the glass surface. In my case, and probably yours too, the sensor itself was perfectly fine, it was just the deteriorating gel pad causing all the trouble. Since you mentioned you're waiting for the next service, just a heads up from my experience, you might want to get it checked sooner. When I kept driving with this issue, moisture started getting trapped between the sensor and windshield, which could've led to bigger problems if left unchecked. The fix is pretty straightforward though, takes about an hour, and like I mentioned before, wasn't expensive at all. Just make sure whoever does the work knows how to properly calibrate the sensor after replacing the gel pad. In my case, they had to do some basic programming to get everything working properly again. Keep me posted on how it goes! Always good to compare notes on these quirks with our BMWs.

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! You've convinced me to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Really appreciate the heads-up about potential moisture issues, definitely don't want to risk any bigger problems developing. I'll call my workshop tomorrow to schedule an appointment. Actually feeling quite relieved now knowing it's a common issue with a straightforward fix. Was worried it might be something more serious with the sensor itself. The cost you mentioned sounds reasonable too, especially compared to what I was imagining! Will take your advice about making sure they know how to calibrate it properly after replacing the gel pad. Really helpful to know about the programming requirement too, will definitely mention that when I book it in. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful! Will try to remember to update you once it's fixed. Seems like us BMW EV owners need to stick together when it comes to these quirky issues!
