BMW i4 Sunblind Failure: Repair Tips and Owner Advice

Hey there! I actually faced a similar issue with my 2018 BMW iX3 last year. The sunblind motor completely failed on mine too, same symptoms with the stuck blind and warning light. Took it to my regular garage, turned out the motor unit had burnt out and needed a complete replacement. It wasn't just a simple fix like a loose connection or fuse. They had to remove the entire headliner to access the motor assembly. Was off the road for about 3 days while they sourced and fitted the new unit. Not the most serious mechanical issue you could have, but definitely needs proper attention from someone who knows what they're doing. These motors tend to fail when there's either a wiring problem or if something's caught in the mechanism. I'd recommend getting it checked soon, leaving it could lead to more damage if there's something jammed in there. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the motor unit. Mine seems to be showing the exact same symptoms you described. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues?

Hey again! Glad to give you an update! Yes, I had that motor replacement done and it cost me 330 € in total. The good news is that since the repair, the sunblind has been working perfectly fine, smooth as silk! Haven't had a single problem with it for over a year now. I was actually pretty relieved it wasn't anything more serious. My mechanic did a great job with the repair, and honestly, even though the cost wasn't exactly pocket change, it was worth every cent to have it working properly again. They had to take apart quite a bit of the interior to get to the motor, but they put everything back together perfectly. Just keep in mind that these electronic components can sometimes be a bit finicky, but once they're properly fixed, they usually stay that way. My iX3 has been running great since then, no other electrical gremlins to report! Hope this helps with your decision making! Let me know if you need any other info.

Thanks a lot for the detailed info! Just got back from the mechanic actually. You were spot on about the motor being the culprit. My repair ended up being pretty similar to yours, though I went to a different shop this time. The whole thing took about four days because they had to order the part, but the actual repair was done in a day. Honestly, it was a much better experience than my last mechanic visit. The guys were upfront about everything, showed me the burnt-out motor, and explained what they were doing. Cost was a bit higher than yours, but at least now everything's working perfectly. The sunblind's moving smoothly again, and that annoying warning light is finally gone. Definitely a relief to have it sorted! Really appreciate your help. It gave me a good idea of what to expect when I took it in. Hope I won't need any more repairs anytime soon, but at least I've found a decent mechanic now!
