BMW i5 Multiple System Failure, FlexRay Bus Problems?

Hi all! My 2024 BMW i5 has completely lost power to multiple systems. The audio is dead, and various electrical components aren't functioning. When scanned, it's showing error codes. I suspect it might be a FlexRay bus issue. Has anyone dealt with similar electrical failures in their i5? What did the workshop diagnose and how was it resolved? Looking for insights before heading to service. Thanks

Hey there! I had a pretty similar issue with my 2022 BMW i4. Also had problems with my mom's i7 last year, so I've got some experience with BMW's electrical quirks (though I'm not a pro mechanic). My i4 showed the same symptoms, lost power to several systems, including the audio. Turned out it was a loose connection in one of the main wiring harnesses. The workshop found that a connector wasn't properly seated, causing intermittent failures across multiple systems. Cost me 95 Euro to get it sorted, they had to remove some panels, reseat the connection properly, and run diagnostics to clear the codes. Could you share more details about when this started happening? Like, did it occur suddenly or gradually? Also, are there any specific conditions when it happens (after driving for a while, when it's cold, etc.)? This info would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My i5 just hit 32100 KM and had its last service about a month ago. The issue actually started quite suddenly while driving, no warning signs beforehand. The strange thing is, it seems to happen out of nowhere regardless of weather or driving conditions. Unlike your case though, once the systems go down, they stay down until I completely power cycle the car. I'm really hoping it's just a connection issue like you had and not something more serious with the FlexRay system. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get it checked at the workshop. At least it's still under warranty!

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your i5. Yeah, that sudden failure pattern is definitely different from what I experienced with my i4. Mine would at least give some warning signs like flickering displays or intermittent audio cuts before completely failing. The fact that yours needs a full power cycle to restore functionality makes me think it might actually be more serious than the loose connection I dealt with. In my case, the systems would sometimes come back on their own after a short while. Since you mentioned it started after your recent service, I'd definitely bring that up with the workshop. There's a chance something got disturbed during the maintenance work. When they were working on my i4, they explained that these new electric BMWs are super sensitive to even minor electrical disturbances. The good news is you're under warranty, so you won't have to fork out like I did! Given my experience with both the i4 and my mom's i7, I'd say don't wait too long to get it checked. These electrical gremlins can sometimes lead to bigger issues if left unchecked. Plus, these cars have so many interconnected systems that it's better to have the pros diagnose it properly. Keep us posted on what they find, I'm really curious if it turns out to be something similar or completely different from what I experienced!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You've actually made me feel a bit more concerned about waiting too long to get this checked out. I've just called the workshop and managed to get an appointment for next week. You're absolutely right about the timing with the recent service, I hadn't even thought about that connection. I'll definitely mention it to them. It's interesting how different the behavior is between what you experienced and my situation. The whole power cycle requirement does sound more serious than a loose connection. I really appreciate you sharing about both your i4 and your mom's i7 experiences, it helps to hear from someone who's dealt with BMW's electrical systems before. I'll make sure to update the thread once I get the diagnosis. Fingers crossed it's something straightforward! Thanks again for all the helpful insights.
