BMW i5 Window Heating Failure: Owners Report Issues

Heated windows without function

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2024 BMW i5 (EV with 65,675 KM). The windshield and rear window heating systems are acting up, sometimes working poorly, sometimes not at all. Car's also showing an error code. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar heating issues in their i5? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for getting this fixed. Thanks!

I experienced something very similar with my 2021 BMW iX3. The symptoms started just like yours, inconsistent window heating and error messages. Took it to the service center and it turned out to be more serious than expected. The main battery was heavily discharged and wasn't providing enough power to the auxiliary systems. The techs found that the primary battery management system was malfunctioning, which caused irregular power distribution to the heating elements. They had to recalibrate the entire system and replace a faulty control module. The repair wasn't quick, had my car in the shop for 3 days. Since the fix, everything's been working perfectly. The heating systems respond immediately, and no more error codes. I'd recommend getting this checked soon because if it's the same issue, it could affect other electrical systems in your car over time. Make sure whoever looks at it has proper EV certification and experience with BMW electric systems. These aren't issues that regular mechanics can easily diagnose or fix.

Thanks for sharing your experience, that's super helpful! I'm dealing with the exact same symptoms in my i5, and it's reassuring to know you got it sorted out. Do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, curious if you've had any other electrical quirks pop up since they fixed it? Really appreciate the tip about finding someone with proper EV certification. Definitely don't want just anyone poking around the electrical systems.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. Just got my car back from the certified BMW EV specialist, and I'm glad I took your advice. The repair bill came to 290 €, mainly for diagnosing and fixing the battery discharge issue. They found pretty much the same problem as I suspected, the battery wasn't providing enough juice to the auxiliary systems. The rear window heating is working perfectly now! It kicks in right away when I need it, and the error codes are completely gone. I've put about 2,000 km on the car since the repair, and everything's running smoothly, no electrical gremlins or any other issues to report. I know you mentioned having similar symptoms with your i5, and honestly, based on my experience, I'd say it's worth getting it checked out by a proper EV-certified technician. These electric systems can be tricky, but once they're properly sorted, they work like a charm. Let me know how you get on with yours!

Thanks for the follow-up! Just got back from the certified EV specialist myself. You were spot on about getting a proper technician. Had basically the same diagnosis, battery system wasn't delivering enough power to the heating elements. Repair took two days and cost a bit more than yours, but totally worth it. The heating works perfectly now, both front and back windows clear up super fast. No more annoying error messages either! The technician also did a full system check and found everything else was working fine. Really glad I asked here before jumping into repairs. Saved me from going back to my old mechanic who probably would've been lost with these EV systems. Appreciate everyone's help and advice, definitely made this whole repair experience much smoother than expected!
