BMW i8's Audio Nightmare: Speakers Cutting Out Randomly

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2014 BMW i8 (91K km). The audio system's acting up, sometimes the subwoofer cuts out completely, other times there's crackling from all speakers, and occasionally the whole system goes dead silent. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm looking for advice. Has anyone dealt with similar audio issues in their i8? What was the cause and how much did the fix cost? Thanks in advance for any insights!

I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i3. The symptoms you're describing are almost identical to what I experienced. Last month at the garage, they found it was actually the amplifier module failing, not the speakers themselves. In my case, moisture had gotten into the amp unit under the front seat, causing intermittent connections. The crackling and cutting out are classic signs of this problem. It's not a catastrophic issue, but it needs proper diagnosis and repair since it can affect the whole audio system. For me, they had to replace the amp unit and check all the wiring connections. The repair took about half a day. The good news is that your speakers are probably fine. Based on my experience, I'd recommend having a certified BMW technician check the amp module first before replacing any speakers. Just make sure they test the system thoroughly while it's acting up. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I'll definitely have them check the amp first, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. By the way, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what's ahead.

Great news, after my last message, I took my i3 to the mechanic and it turned out to be a bit different from what I initially thought. The main issue was actually a faulty bass speaker, not the amp unit I suspected. They fixed it up and the whole audio system's been working like a charm since then. The total cost came to 280 € for replacing the defective bass speaker. Much better than having to replace the entire amp module, which I was worried about! It's been about three weeks now, and there's been no more crackling, cutting out, or any other issues. The sound quality is back to being crystal clear. Just make sure they do a thorough check of your system, sometimes the obvious solution isn't always the right one, as I learned. Really glad I got it sorted though, and I hope you can get yours fixed without too much hassle. Let me know how it goes!

Just wanted to update you, I took your advice and got it checked out today. Turns out my issue was different from both our initial thoughts! The mechanic found loose wiring connections near the trunk that were causing all the audio problems. Some of the connections had corroded over time. The fix was surprisingly simple and cheap, just needed proper cleaning and securing of the connections. Only paid 120 € for the diagnostic and repair work. Can't believe I was stressing so much about this! The sound system's working perfectly now, no more crackling or cutting out. Such a relief! Thanks again for all your help and sharing your experience. It really gave me the push I needed to get it sorted.
