BMW i8 Hybrid Running Rough? Misfires May Be The Culprit

Hey there! Got a concerning issue with my 2019 BMW i8 Hybrid (28,213 km). The engine's been acting up lately, running rough with delayed throttle response and unusual jerking during acceleration. The check engine light is now on too. Pretty sure it's cylinder misfires, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their i8? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and trusted mechanics who actually know their way around these hybrids. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2016 BMW i3s Hybrid last winter. Those symptoms you're describing, rough running, hesitation, and jerking, match exactly what I experienced. Turned out to be a faulty fuel injector in my case. Had it diagnosed at the dealership, where they found carbon buildup causing one injector to spray irregularly. They had to replace two injectors and clean the intake valves. It was quite serious since bad injectors can damage other engine components if left unchecked. The repair took about two days. My advice? Don't wait on this one. These symptoms won't resolve themselves, and hybrid systems need specialized knowledge. The dealership might be your best bet for this particular issue, as they have the right diagnostic tools for BMW hybrids. Good luck with yours.

Hey, thanks so much for sharing your experience! It's quite reassuring to hear someone else went through the same thing. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the injector replacement and valve cleaning set you back? And has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting it fixed, my i3s has been running like a dream, absolutely no more misfires or jerking issues. The repair cost me 515 € for replacing the faulty injector, and honestly, it was worth every penny. Since having it done, the car feels brand new, smooth acceleration, no hesitation, and that annoying check engine light is gone for good. It's been several months now, and I haven't noticed any other weird quirks or problems. The engine response is perfect, and the hybrid system is working just as it should. Trust me, getting it sorted at a proper shop was the right call. These hybrid systems are complex, but once you fix the root cause, they're incredibly reliable. Just make sure you're going to someone who really knows what they're doing with these cars. Let me know how yours turns out!

Thanks for all the details! I actually took your advice and bit the bullet, had my i8 checked out yesterday. Turns out you were spot on about the injectors! Had two of them replaced, plus they did a thorough valve cleaning. The bill came to a bit more than yours, but honestly, the car feels completely different now. The throttle response is crisp again, no more jerking or rough running. It's amazing how such a relatively simple fix made such a huge difference. The mechanic I found was actually great, super knowledgeable about hybrids and took the time to explain everything they were doing. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to get it sorted before it turned into something worse. The car's purring like a kitten now! Thanks again for all your help!
