Thanks for sharing your experience! My i8 just had its latest service about 2 months ago, and I'm currently at 128014 KM. Actually, now that you mention it, I did notice some slight whining sounds for about a week before the warning lights came on. It started really subtle, mostly during cold starts, but I ignored it thinking it would go away. The symptoms you described with your i4 sound spot-on to what I'm experiencing. It's a bit reassuring to hear it might just be a low oil level issue rather than something more serious. I'll definitely get it checked out right away. Didn't know a simple oil level problem could cause this much drama with the transmission! Did your mechanic mention how the oil got low in the first place?

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your i8. those whining sounds you mentioned during cold starts, that's exactly what I heard too! When I read your description, it brought back memories of my panic when it first happened to my i4. You know what's funny? My car had just been serviced about 3 months before the issues started too. When I asked my mechanic about how the oil got low so quickly, he explained that hybrid transmissions can sometimes develop small, slow leaks that are hard to spot during routine service. In my case, they found a tiny leak from one of the transmission seals, nothing major, but enough to cause the oil level to drop over time. The good news is that it's not usually a complex fix. Just to give you peace of mind, after they fixed my leak and did the oil refill, I haven't had a single issue. The grinding completely disappeared, and the transmission's been working perfectly. One thing though, since your i8 has similar mileage to what my i4 had when this happened (I was around 125000 km), it might be worth asking them to do a thorough check of all the transmission seals while they're at it. Could save you from having the same problem pop up again in a few months. Have you noticed if there are any spots where you park? My leak was so small I never saw drips, but there was a very slight residue building up on part of the transmission housing.

Thanks so much for all that detailed information! No, I haven't noticed any spots when parking, but I'll definitely check the transmission housing for residue tomorrow morning. You've actually made me feel a lot better about this whole situation, I was worried I'd be looking at a massive repair bill! I've just booked the car in for tomorrow morning at the workshop. I'll make sure to mention the transmission seals specifically and get them to do that thorough check you suggested. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's super helpful knowing someone else has dealt with the same issue and got it sorted without too much drama. I'll probably do what you did, get the seals checked and replaced if needed, along with the oil refill. Thanks again for all your help!

Hey there! I had a pretty similar issue with my BMW i4 2020 Hybrid last year. My regular mechanic has some experience with hybrids, though BMW's aren't his specialty. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with, warning lights, rough shifts, and that nasty grinding. Turned out my gearbox oil level was critically low, which triggered the emergency mode. Got it fixed at the workshop for about 365 Euro, they did a complete oil refill and system check. The transmission's been smooth as silk since then. Before diving deeper, could you share: Any unusual noises before the warnings started? Current mileage on your i8? How long have you been experiencing these symptoms? Sometimes these issues can be related to different causes in different model years, so knowing more details would help. BTW, have you checked with your local BMW service center? They might have specific insights for the i8.
