BMW i8 Hybrid: Rough Running & Throttle Issues Demystified

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2015 BMW i8 hybrid. The engine's running rough with delayed throttle response, jerking during acceleration, and burning more fuel than usual. Check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be a Valvetronic issue. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for insights on diagnostics and repair experiences, especially from those who got it fixed at a workshop. What should I expect?

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs (some experience level). Had a similar issue with my 2013 BMW i3, and my owns a BMW X3. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. Mine had the same problems, rough running, delayed response, and terrible fuel economy. Took it to my trusted workshop, and yes, it was the Valvetronic mechanism. They had to do a complete run-in and replacement of some defective parts. Set me back about 575 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. Before I share more specific details, could you tell me your current mileage and whether you've had any previous work done on the Valvetronic system? Also, are you getting any specific error codes? This info would help me give you more targeted advice based on my experience. After the fix, my car's been running smooth as butter. Worth every penny!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My i8 has 112666 KM on the clock, and the last service was actually just three months ago, nothing related to the Valvetronic system though. I've got the error code P1014 showing up on my scanner, which apparently points to that system. Good to hear your fix worked out well! Did your workshop mention how long the repair took? I'm trying to figure out if I need to arrange alternative transport. Also, was wondering if your fuel economy went back to normal right after the fix or if it took some time to adjust?

Hey again! Yeah, looking at your mileage and that P1014 code, it's definitely similar to what I experienced. My i3 had about 98000 KM when I had the same issue. About the repair time, in my case, they kept the car for two full days. The actual work didn't take that long (about 6-7 hours), but they needed to run several tests before and after to make sure everything was properly calibrated. I'd definitely recommend arranging alternative transport just to be safe. Funny you ask about the fuel economy, it actually took about 200-300 KM before it returned to normal. The workshop explained that the engine management system needs some time to relearn and optimize after such repairs. But once it settled, wow, what a difference! My consumption dropped back to normal and the engine felt much more responsive. Just a heads up, make sure they check the wiring harness around the Valvetronic motor too. In my case, they found some wear there that could have caused future problems if left unchecked. It might be worth asking them to include that in the inspection. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes with the repair. Really curious to hear if your experience matches mine.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's super helpful, especially about the fuel economy taking time to normalize. I'll definitely plan for alternative transport for a couple of days then. Good tip about the wiring harness too, I'll make sure to mention that when I take it in. I've already called my regular workshop and booked it in for next week. They seemed quite familiar with the issue when I mentioned the symptoms and the P1014 code. Fingers crossed it'll be as straightforward as your repair was! The thought of getting back to normal fuel consumption and smooth acceleration is already making me feel better about the whole situation. I'll probably need to do some longer drives after the repair to help the system relearn properly, based on what you said about the 200-300 KM adjustment period. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's really helped me know what to expect. I'll let you know how everything turns out once it's fixed!
