BMW i8 Power Loss & Stalling, DISA Valve Issues?

Hey there BMW i8 owners, my 2020 i8 hybrid has been acting up lately. Getting reduced power, rough idling, stalling at idle, and sluggish throttle response. Check engine light is on too. I suspect it might be the DISA valve, but wanted to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone here experienced this? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Looking forward to your insights. Thanks

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs, I own a 2018 BMW i3 and previously had a BMW 3 series. I'd say I have low experience with repairs, but I actually dealt with very similar symptoms recently. My i3 showed the exact same issues, reduced power, rough idle, and that dreaded check engine light. After some back and forth with my workshop, they diagnosed it as a faulty DISA valve. Got it fixed about 2 months ago, the whole DISA unit needed replacement. Cost me around 280 Euro, but the car's running smooth as butter now. Can you share some more details about when these symptoms started? Also, have you scanned for error codes? Knowing the specific codes would help confirm if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Just to be sure we're on the same page, what's your mileage, and have you noticed any other unusual sounds or behavior?

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience. My i8 has clocked 71496 KM and had its latest service just a few months ago. Actually, the symptoms started right after a long highway drive. I did get it scanned at a local shop and got error code P1017, which points to the DISA valve issue you mentioned. The strange thing is, it doesn't make any unusual sounds, just the poor performance and that annoying idle issue. Good to know your repair was straightforward, even though it was on a different model. I've scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for next week, but was hoping to get some real-world feedback from other owners in the meantime. Your experience definitely helps confirm my suspicions about the DISA valve. Did you notice any immediate difference after the replacement?

Hey again! Glad I could help earlier. Yeah, after getting my DISA valve replaced on my i3, the difference was like night and day, literally felt it as soon as I started the car. The idle smoothed right out, and that annoying power reduction completely disappeared. Since you mentioned getting the P1017 code, that's exactly what I had too! And interesting that yours also started after a highway drive, pretty similar to my situation. My mechanic explained that extended high-speed driving can sometimes be the final straw for an already wearing DISA valve. The fact that you're not hearing any unusual sounds is actually pretty common with DISA valve issues. Mine was the same way, just the performance problems without any weird noises. The good thing is, once it's replaced, these symptoms should clear up pretty quickly. Just a heads up though, make sure they check the connecting parts while they're in there. In my case, they found some wear on the connecting rod, but luckily it wasn't bad enough to need replacement. When you get it fixed next week, you might want to mention this to your mechanic. Better to catch any related issues while they're already working on it. Let me know how it goes after the repair, always curious to hear if others have the same positive results I did!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! You've definitely helped put my mind at ease about this whole situation. It's really reassuring to hear that your repair went smoothly and made such an immediate difference. The fact that we had the same error code and similar circumstances makes me pretty confident we're dealing with the same issue. I'll definitely take your advice about asking the mechanic to check the connecting parts, that's a great tip I wouldn't have thought of. I don't want to end up having to go back in a few months for related problems that could've been caught now. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice. I'll make sure to update the forum after I get it fixed next week. If it turns out to be anything different or if there are any complications, that information might help other i8 owners down the line too. Thanks again for all your help with this!
