BMW iX1 Tailgate Malfunction, Hall Sensor Issue?

Hey all, having trouble with my 2022 BMW iX1. The tailgate won't fully open or close, and there's an error code stored in the system. I suspect it might be related to a faulty hall sensor in the tailgate. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the workshop did to fix it. Any input would be appreciated.

Hey there! I have some experience working on EVs and had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW iX3 (also have an i4 in the family). I totally get your frustration with the tailgate problem. Had the exact same symptoms, tailgate acting up and error codes popping up. Took it to my workshop and turns out it was just a loose cable connection to the control module. They had to remove some panels, reconnect everything properly, and run a diagnostic reset. Cost me 95 Euro and it's been working perfectly since. Before I share more specific advice, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error messages on your display? Also, does the tailgate make any unusual sounds when you try to operate it?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My vehicle only has 76796 KM on the odometer, so this is quite disappointing to experience so early on. No unusual sounds from the tailgate, but I'm getting error code P1B9D when I scan it. The display just shows "Tailgate System Error" without much detail. Really hoping it's just a loose connection like in your case and not something more serious with the sensors. Has anyone else run into this specific error code?

Hey again! Yeah, that P1B9D code is quite familiar to me. When I had my issue, I also had relatively low mileage (around 65000 KM), so I know how frustrating it can be when these things happen to a fairly new car. In my case, even though the loose connection was the main culprit, the error code stuck around until they did a proper reset. The thing about these modern BMWs is that once they detect an error, they can be quite stubborn about keeping it in the system even after the physical issue is fixed. Since you're not getting any unusual sounds (like I wasn't), that's actually a good sign. When there's a mechanical problem with the motor or struts, you typically hear grinding or clicking noises. The clean operation but incomplete movement usually points to an electrical issue. Quick question, have you noticed if it's worse in certain weather conditions? With my iX3, I found it was more problematic during wet weather before the repair, which was another clue pointing to the electrical connection issue. I'd definitely recommend getting it checked soon though. These things can sometimes get worse if left unchecked, and you don't want to risk having the tailgate stuck in an awkward position (been there, not fun!).

Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah, I've noticed it does act up more when it's raining or after washing the car. That really makes me think you're onto something with the electrical connection theory. I'll definitely get it checked out this week, can't risk having it fail completely, especially since I use the trunk space quite often. The low mileage thing is still bugging me, but at least it sounds like it might be a relatively straightforward fix based on your experience. I'll make sure to ask them to check those connections first before they start replacing more expensive parts. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your insights about this issue. I'll update once I get it sorted out, might help others who run into the same problem with their iX1.
