BMW iX2 Seat Belt Handover Function Failure Fix Needed
Seatbelt carrier problem

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just had my service done last week at 102009 KM, and this belt issue started right after. I'm getting a "Restraint system malfunction" error on the display, but no unusual sounds from the mechanism, it's just completely unresponsive. Really hoping I don't need the entire unit replaced like in your case, but it's good to know what I might be dealing with. I'll probably need to schedule a workshop visit soon. Did your warranty cover any of the repair costs?
Hey again! Yeah, that "Restraint system malfunction" message is exactly what I got too, such a pain right after service! In my case, warranty didn't cover it since I was just past the 3-year mark when it happened. Given you mentioned it started right after your service, I'd definitely bring that up with the workshop. Sometimes these issues can pop up if something wasn't properly reconnected during routine maintenance. The timing seems too coincidental. The fact that yours is completely unresponsive without any noise is actually quite similar to what I experienced. I initially hoped it was just a loose connection, but nope, ended up being the whole unit. The upside is that once they replaced it, it's been rock solid for the past 8 months. Quick tip though, while you're waiting for the workshop appointment, try disconnecting your car battery for about 15 minutes. It might reset the system. Didn't work for me ultimately, but I've heard it helped some other BMW owners with similar issues. Worth a shot before spending the big bucks! Let me know how it goes, curious if you end up having the same root cause as mine.
Thanks for that detailed response! I'll definitely try that battery reset trick before heading to the workshop, nothing to lose at this point. The timing with the service is super suspicious, so I'm going to call them tomorrow and mention it. Really hoping it's just a connection issue they can sort out quickly and not the entire unit needing replacement. Still kicking myself for not taking the extended warranty when I had the chance, would've been handy right about now! I'll keep everyone posted once I figure out what's actually causing the problem. At least it's good to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this belt handover headache. Fingers crossed it's something simple and won't destroy my wallet too badly!
Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2022 BMW i4 last year (also own a BMW iX3). The belt handover mechanism completely failed on me, super annoying. Took it to my workshop and they diagnosed a faulty belt bringer unit. They had to replace the entire mechanism. The fix cost me 455 Euro, but it's been working perfectly since then. My mechanic said these systems can sometimes fail due to regular wear or electronic glitches. Before I can share more specific advice, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error messages on your dash? Also, does the mechanism make any unusual sounds when trying to work? This info would help me better compare it to what I experienced. Hope this helps as a starting point!
