BMW Light Switch Failure Causing Multiple System Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2016 BMW 1 Series owner experienced uncontrollable lighting issues, with the low beam stuck on and error codes appearing, likely due to a faulty light switch. A similar case involved a corroded cable harness causing intermittent contact issues, resolved by replacing the light switch module and harness connector. The suggested solution is to have a mechanic check for corrosion and replace necessary components using genuine BMW parts to prevent further electrical problems. The repair is not overly complex and can restore normal lighting function, providing peace of mind.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Really helpful to hear from someone who went through the same headache. You mentioning the corroded harness makes a lot of sense, might be exactly what I'm dealing with. Quick question though, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole fix? Also, has everything been working perfectly since the repair, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks?

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. After getting it fixed, my BMW's lighting system has been working flawlessly, no more crazy light shows or error codes! The total repair came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable connection, which was way less than I initially feared. The mechanic did a thorough job checking all the connections and cleaned up the corroded bits. Honestly, it was worth every penny because I haven't had a single electrical problem since then. The switch now feels solid when operating, and all the lights respond exactly as they should. I really lucked out with the garage I found, they knew exactly what they were doing with BMWs. If you're still looking to get yours fixed, I'd say go for it. The peace of mind is totally worth it, and it's not nearly as expensive as some other BMW repairs can be. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Always happy to help a fellow BMW owner!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday. You were right, it was a corroded harness causing all the trouble. Found a mechanic who specializes in European cars and they sorted it out in about 3 hours. The final bill came to a bit more than yours since they had to replace some additional connectors, but still reasonable considering it's a BMW repair. The best part? All my lights are working normally again! No more mysterious light shows or error messages on my dashboard. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. The mechanic mentioned that leaving it unfixed could've led to more serious electrical issues down the line. They also gave the whole lighting system a thorough check while they were at it. Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction with your advice. It's such a relief to have this sorted out!

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 2 Series last month. The symptoms were almost identical, lights had a mind of their own and the error code kept popping up. Turned out the cable harness connecting to the light switch module was corroded and had some loose pins. Got it checked at the garage and they found that moisture had gotten into the connection, causing intermittent contact issues. The fix wasn't too complex, they replaced the entire light switch module and harness connector. The mechanic mentioned this is actually a known issue in some BMW models from that generation. This wasn't a serious problem in terms of safety, but it definitely needed fixing to prevent further electrical issues. The repair took about 2 hours total. Just make sure whoever does the work uses genuine BMW parts for the replacement, aftermarket switches can cause more problems down the line. Hope this helps with your decision. Let us know how it turns out.
