BMW M2 Seat Heater Cutting Out: Quick Fix Needed

Hey there! My '15 BMW M2 (gas, 158k km) is having seat heater troubles. The heating doesn't warm up properly and keeps shutting off after a few seconds. There's also an error code stored in the system. I had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm looking for advice from other M2 owners who might have dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this before, and if so, what was the fix? Any recommendations for getting this sorted? Thanks!

Hey, had the exact same problem with my 2018 BMW M4 last winter. The heating mat in the driver's seat was failing, kept cutting out just like yours. The error code pointed to a defective heating element in the seat. Took it to the garage and they confirmed my suspicions: the heating mat was shot and needed replacement. It wasn't just a fuse or wiring issue as I initially hoped. They had to remove the entire seat cover to replace the heating element. Pretty extensive job, but not something that affects safety or performance. The repair took about a day since they had to carefully disassemble the whole seat to get to the heating mat. Worth getting it fixed though, these heating mats typically don't repair themselves and usually get worse over time. My advice? Get it checked soon by a BMW specialist. The symptoms you're describing are textbook heating mat failure. Don't try any DIY fixes on this one, the seat has airbag sensors and other safety components that need proper handling.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! That's super helpful and sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'll definitely get it looked at by a specialist. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the fix? And has everything been working fine since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Glad I could help. Just wanted to follow up, I got the seat heater fixed and it cost me 390€ in total. And honestly, it was money well spent! The heating's been working perfectly since the repair a few months back. No more frustrating cut-outs or cold spots, just nice consistent warmth when I need it. The mechanic did a really thorough job replacing the heating mat. They had to take apart the whole seat as I mentioned before, but they put everything back together perfectly, you can't even tell it was worked on. I know my previous post might've made it sound like a scary repair, but it was totally worth it. The seat heater now works just like it did when the car was new. No other issues have popped up since then either. Definitely one of those "fix it and forget it" kind of repairs. Let me know if you end up getting yours fixed! Always curious to hear how these repairs work out for others.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You're not gonna believe this, but my issue was almost identical. The shop confirmed it was the heating mat and replaced it. Ended up paying about the same as you, and I'm honestly relieved it's finally fixed. The funny part was watching them take the whole seat apart, looked way more complicated than I expected! But they knew exactly what they were doing. The mechanic showed me the old heating mat and yeah, it was definitely toast. Got to test it on my drive home and what a difference! No more unusual shutoffs, and the heat's actually staying consistent now. Such a relief after dealing with that annoying problem for weeks. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me feel much more confident about getting it fixed. Sometimes you just need to hear from someone who's been through the same thing, you know? Anyway, here's hoping both our seat heaters keep working perfectly through many cold mornings to come!
