BMW M2 Sunroof Nightmare: Control System Goes Haywire

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is at 85294 KM and I just had my service last month. The issue actually started quite suddenly, no warning signs before. I tried the 30-second reset trick you mentioned multiple times, but no luck. Unfortunately, no other error messages showing up, just that single "sunroof not initialized" warning that keeps popping up. Really hoping it's just a module thing like in your case and not something more serious with the mechanics. Anyway, I'll probably have to bite the bullet and take it to a specialist. Did your fix stay permanent or did you have any recurring issues after the reset?

Hey again! Glad to give you an update on my experience. After that coding reset I mentioned for my M3, I actually did have the issue come back about 8 months later. Second time around, turned out there was more to it, the motor that controls the sunroof mechanism had some worn-out parts. The mechanic explained that sometimes these initial resets are just temporary fixes, and there might be underlying mechanical wear that needs addressing. In my case, they had to replace some components in the motor assembly. Was definitely pricier than the first fix, ran me about 400 Euro, but it's been working perfectly since then. Given what you're describing and considering your mileage, I'd bet you're facing something similar. The sudden onset without warning is exactly what happened to me. Since your basic service didn't catch anything last month, it's probably developed recently. These systems can be really sensitive. My advice would be to skip the band-aid fixes and get the whole mechanism checked out properly. Might cost more upfront, but you'll likely save yourself another workshop visit down the line. Let me know what you find out when you get it looked at!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful to know about the potential motor issue, definitely not what I wanted to hear about the cost, but better to know what I might be facing. Pretty interesting that your experience was so similar, especially with the sudden failure. I've actually just booked it in for next week at a BMW specialist workshop, and I'll make sure to mention the motor assembly wear you experienced. Really appreciate you taking the time to share the full story, especially about the issue coming back after the initial fix. Would've been frustrating to pay for the reset only to have problems again, so I'll probably push for them to do a thorough check of the whole mechanism right from the start. Will definitely update the forum once I know what's actually wrong with mine. Thanks again for all the insights!

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs, as I've owned a 2013 BMW M3 and currently drive a 2017 M4. While I'm not a pro mechanic, I've dealt with a fair share of issues over the years. Had almost the exact same problem with my M3's sunroof. The control unit just went crazy one day, complete with error messages and all. Took it to my regular workshop and they performed a coding reset on the sunroof module. The whole thing cost me about 75 Euro and took around an hour. Can you share if you're getting any other error messages? Also, have you tried the basic reset (holding the button for 30 seconds)? Might help to know if the problem started suddenly or developed over time. If the basic reset doesn't work, it's likely a control module issue that needs proper coding. Best to have it checked by someone who knows BMW systems well.
