BMW M2 Warning Lights & Dead Cruise Control, Help!

Help needed: BMW M2 2018 Multiple Warning Lights + Cruise Control Issue Having some weird electrical problems with my M2. Multiple warning lights keep popping up on the dash (ABS, ESP, brake system). Steering wheel buttons are dead and cruise control isn't working at all. Scanned the car and it's showing error codes. Anyone else dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in what the root cause was and how your mechanic fixed it. Any tips on what to check first would be great. Let me know what you found out when you had this fixed. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW M4 last year (also had an M3 before). I've got some experience working on BMWs, though I'm no expert. Those symptoms sound really familiar, I had multiple warning lights and my cruise control went completely dead. Turned out it was a faulty wiring connection in the steering wheel module. These issues can be tricky to diagnose because they trigger multiple error codes. Took it to my regular BMW specialist and they found a damaged cable connector behind the steering wheel that was causing all sorts of electrical gremlins. Total repair was around 95 Euro, mostly labor costs for diagnosing and fixing the connection. What year exactly is your M2? Also, have you noticed if the issue happens more when turning the steering wheel? That could help confirm if it's the same problem. Let me know and I can share more details about what my mechanic did.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 2018 M2 is actually doing the exact same things you described, definitely sounds like we're dealing with the same gremlin. I just had it serviced last month at 140723 KM, so I was surprised to see these issues pop up. When I turn the wheel sharply, the warning lights seem to go crazy, so you might be onto something with that steering wheel module connection. I'll get it checked out by my mechanic and focus on the wiring behind the steering wheel first. Really helpful to know it might not be something super expensive. Would be great if it's just a loose connection like in your case. I'll update the thread once I figure out what's causing it. Thanks again for the detailed response!

Hey again! Glad I could help with the initial diagnosis. Yeah, those symptoms with the warning lights going nuts during sharp turns definitely match what I experienced with my M4. Since you mentioned it happens at around 140k km, that's pretty much the same mileage when mine started acting up too. When my mechanic dug deeper, they found that the constant turning motion had actually worn down the insulation on one of the wires in the steering wheel harness. It was making intermittent contact, which explained why the warnings would come and go. The cruise control and steering wheel buttons sharing the same wiring explained why they all failed together. Quick tip: while you're waiting to get it to the mechanic, try not to make too many sharp turns if possible. In my case, the loose connection eventually started affecting the airbag system too, which threw up even more warning lights. Good call on getting it checked soon, these electrical issues can sometimes cascade into bigger problems if left unchecked. Let us know what your mechanic finds. I'm pretty confident it'll be a similar fix to what I had done.

Thanks for the additional info and that really helpful tip about avoiding sharp turns! I've noticed more warning lights popping up today, so I've already scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning. Don't want to risk any airbag issues like you mentioned. Your explanation about the worn insulation makes perfect sense given how the symptoms match up, especially with the similar mileage. It's actually a relief to know it's likely just a wiring issue rather than something more serious with the electronic systems themselves. I'll definitely avoid any unnecessary sharp turns until it's fixed. Once my mechanic checks it out, I'll post an update here about what they find. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made me feel a lot better about the whole situation! Hope this helps anyone else who might run into similar issues with their M2 or other BMW models down the line.
