BMW M2: Cooling Grille May Cause Multiple Warning Lights

Hi all! My 2021 BMW M2 has been acting up lately. The temp gauge shows weird readings, CEL is on, and the engine's taking forever to warm up. I suspect the cooling grille might be causing these issues. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms, and how did your workshop handle the fix? Would love to hear about repair experiences and costs. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M3 last year. Those symptoms sound very familiar. Initially thought it was something major, but turned out to be a blown fuse that was messing with the active grille control and temperature sensors. My trusted mechanic diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair was straightforward, just needed a fuse replacement and a system reset. Total cost was around 52 Euro for parts and labor. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Any other warning lights besides the CEL? Does this happen more during cold starts? Have you noticed any changes in fuel consumption? This info would help to confirm if you're dealing with the same issue I had. While my fix was simple, these symptoms can sometimes point to other problems in BMWs.

Thanks for your input! Yeah, I've got similar symptoms with my M2. Just had my service done at 183254 KM, but these issues started popping up recently. To answer your questions: no other warning lights besides the CEL, and yes, it's definitely worse during cold starts. Haven't really tracked fuel consumption lately, but the car does feel a bit thirstier than usual. I'll get it checked out at the workshop this week. Good to hear your fix was relatively simple and cheap, hoping for the same luck with mine! Will update once I know what's causing it.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, those symptoms are definitely matching what I experienced with my M3. Since you mentioned it's worse during cold starts and the fuel consumption seems higher, I'm even more convinced it's similar to my issue. After dealing with mine, I learned that these problems often show up around that mileage range, mine started acting up at about 175000 KM. The fuse thing I mentioned earlier was just part of the story, they also found some debris blocking the grille actuator, which was causing it to stay partially closed. That explained the weird temp readings and slow warm-up times. Quick tip from my experience, make sure they check the wiring harness too. My mechanic found some minor corrosion on the connectors that could've caused problems down the line. It's worth the extra inspection while they're in there. Let us know what the workshop says. If it turns out to be the same issue, the fix should be pretty straightforward. My car's been running perfectly since then, no more temp gauge acting up or cold start issues.

Thanks for all the details! Just got back from the workshop, and you guys were spot on! Turns out it was exactly what you described, a blown fuse and some debris messing with the grille actuator. They also found a bit of corrosion on the connectors, just like you mentioned. The whole fix was pretty reasonable, came to about 150 Euro including parts, labor, and the extra inspection of the wiring harness. They cleaned everything up, replaced the fuse, and reset the system. Took them about two hours to sort it all out. Car's running like a dream now, temp gauge is steady, CEL's gone, and it warms up normally. Really glad it wasn't anything more serious! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me know what to expect and made me feel better about the whole situation. Guess these BMWs do have their quirks at higher mileage, but at least this one was an easy fix. Really appreciate all the help and advice!
