BMW M3 ABS Light Mystery: Speed Sensor or More?

Need help with 2000 BMW M3 ABS issues! My M3 has started acting weird with constant ABS light, unpredictable traction control interventions, and jerky acceleration even on dry roads. The error scan shows ABS system faults. I suspect it might be related to a speed sensor problem. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested in hearing what the actual fix was in your case and which components were replaced. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2002 BMW M5 last year. I have some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff. The symptoms you described sound exactly like what I experienced. My ABS light was constantly on, and the car would out of nowhere engage traction control. I initially thought it was just a sensor too, but after taking it to my trusted workshop, they diagnosed a faulty ABS control unit. The fix wasn't cheap, ended up paying around 1000 Euro for a new control unit and programming. But it solved all those annoying issues completely, and the car's been running perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Any specific error codes you're getting? Did this start suddenly or gradually? Have you had any recent work done on the braking system? This could help pinpoint if you're dealing with the same issue or something else entirely.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My M3 (98418 KM) has been throwing error code 5DF0 consistently. The issue started quite suddenly last week after a heavy rainfall. Haven't had any recent brake work done, just regular maintenance during my last service two months ago. I was hoping it would be just a sensor, given how expensive control units are these days. Your M5 story has me worried it might be the same underlying problem though. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get it properly diagnosed rather than just hoping it's something simple. Has anyone else faced similar symptoms with a different root cause? Would love to hear more experiences before heading to the shop.

Hey again! After seeing your error code and hearing about the rainfall detail, I think I might have jumped the gun suggesting it was definitely the control unit. You know what's funny, when I look back at my M5's situation more carefully, I actually had some water-related issues too. After that expensive control unit replacement I mentioned earlier, I later found out through another mechanic that my car had a similar problem after rain, but it was actually caused by corroded wiring connections to the ABS sensors. In my case, the 5DF0 code was showing up because water had gotten into the wheel speed sensor connectors and caused some corrosion. The connectors were barely making contact, sending weird signals to the ABS unit. Looking back, I probably should've checked that first before replacing the whole control unit. Maybe try having someone inspect the wiring and connections around your wheel speed sensors, especially given the timing with the rainfall. Could save you a bunch of money if it turns out to be just corroded connections like mine ultimately was. I'm still kicking myself for not checking that first! Let us know what you find out. I'm really curious if your M3 has the same sneaky wiring issue mine had.

Wow, this is super helpful info about the corroded wiring! You might've just saved me a ton of money and headache. I actually noticed the issues started right after driving through some deep puddles during that rainfall, so what you're saying about the connections makes perfect sense. I just checked my maintenance records and realized the previous owner had replaced the ABS control unit about 30k kilometers ago, which makes me even more confident it's probably not that failing again. I'll definitely have my mechanic check those sensor connections and wiring first before we jump into replacing expensive components. Really appreciate you sharing that follow-up about your M5 experience, especially the part about discovering the real issue later. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out. Thanks again for helping me avoid potentially unnecessary repairs!
