Hey, glad someone else faced this too. Same thing happened on my E46 M3. Clock spring replacement fixed everything, steering controls, warning lights, the whole mess. Really good explanation about how it works, spot on about the safety aspect too. Just curious, how much did you end up paying for the repair? And has everything been working properly since then? Mine's due for a check soon and I'd like to know what to expect cost-wise.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your cost question. After I got my M5 back from the mechanic, everything's been working perfectly, all steering wheel controls are back to normal and those annoying warning lights are gone for good. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable connection in the steering wheel. Honestly, it was cheaper than I expected, especially considering all the warning lights and issues it was causing. The mechanic did a great job, they really knew what they were doing with the BMW electrical systems. It's been about six weeks now since the repair, and I haven't had a single problem. The radio controls, phone buttons, everything works just like new. Looking back, I should've gotten it fixed sooner rather than worrying about the cost. Definitely worth every penny to have all the functions working properly again, especially since it involves the airbag system. If you're heading to get yours checked soon, at least you know you're probably looking at a similar price range, assuming it's the same issue. Just make sure you find someone who knows their way around BMW electronics.

Thanks for sharing the cost details! I bit the bullet and took my M3 to a new mechanic yesterday. Same diagnosis, clock spring needed replacement. My bill was a bit higher at 120 € since they had to order the part, but honestly, I'm just glad it's fixed. The mechanic was super professional, showed me the old clock spring and explained everything. All my steering controls are back, warning lights are gone, and the airbag system is working properly. Such a relief! They even cleaned up some corroded connections while they were in there. Really appreciate everyone's input here. I was stressing about this way more than necessary. For anyone else reading this with similar issues, don't wait around like I did, just get it checked out. The fix is pretty straightforward and definitely worth it for safety alone.

Had the same issue with my 2007 BMW M5 last month. The steering wheel controls just died one morning, radio, phone, everything. Got multiple warning lights too, including the airbag. Turned out to be a damaged clock spring/spiral cable in the steering column. The cable basically connects all steering wheel functions to the car's electrical system. It's a common wear point in these models because the cable flexes every time you turn the wheel. My trusted mechanic showed me the old cable, it was pretty worn and had some broken wires inside. This isn't something you want to ignore since it affects safety systems like the airbag. Took about half a day to fix, they had to remove the steering wheel and replace the entire clock spring assembly. Worth getting it checked soon since it's connected to your airbag system. Can recommend finding a mechanic who specializes in BMW electrical systems for this kind of work.
