Hey, thanks so much for sharing your experience! This really sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. Good to know it was just the wiring harness in your case. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the repair? Just want to make sure I have a good idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if it's likely to be a permanent fix.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting my M4 fixed, everything's been working perfectly, not a single problem with the tailgate since then. The repair was actually pretty straightforward, turned out it was just a faulty cable connection at the hall sensor, which the mechanic sorted out quickly. Total bill came to 95 € for the fix, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting. You'll be glad to know the sensor fault warning has completely disappeared. I can open and close the tailgate as much as I want now without any error messages popping up. Such a relief! The mechanic mentioned these kinds of issues are pretty common in our BMW models, so you're definitely not alone with this problem. My advice? Go ahead and get it checked out, sounds like you've got the same issue I had, and it's better to fix it now before it potentially gets worse. Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted!

Thanks for all the details! I bit the bullet and took my M3 to a mechanic yesterday. You were right, it was definitely worth getting it checked out. The issue turned out to be pretty similar to yours, but in my case, they found both a damaged wire and a slightly worn-out sensor. The repair cost a bit more than yours, ended up paying around 150 € for parts and labor, but honestly, I'm just relieved it's fixed. The mechanic was actually really good, showed me exactly what was wrong, and explained everything clearly. Such a different experience from my last garage visit! The tailgate's working perfectly now, no more error messages or struggling with the opening mechanism. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it. Really appreciate your help in pushing me to get it sorted. It's good to know there are still some honest mechanics out there who won't take advantage of you!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M4. The tailgate sensor was giving me trouble last month. Turned out the wiring harness had some damaged cables and corroded connectors near the tailgate hinges. Had it fixed at my regular garage, wasn't a major repair but definitely needed proper attention to identify the exact connection points causing the issue. The mechanic showed me how the wiring was rubbing against the hinge, which eventually exposed the cables. In my case, they had to replace part of the harness and install new connectors. Not a serious mechanical problem, but it needed to be addressed to prevent further electrical issues. They also checked the hall sensor while they were at it, it's pretty common for these to act up on these models. If you're getting error codes, I'd recommend getting it checked soon to avoid any potential damage to the tailgate mechanism. Hope this helps with your decision!
