Thanks for the detailed response! My M3 is still quite new at 44422 KM and just had its latest service. Yeah, the transmission warning light came on about a week ago, and that's when the problems started. First, it was just sluggish shifts, but now it's getting worse with that grinding noise. Really helpful to hear about your experience with the TCU replacement. Been worried about the potential costs, so knowing what you paid gives me a better idea of what to expect. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer since it should still be under warranty. Just wanted to check if others had similar experiences before going that route.

Hey again! Yeah, based on what you're describing, it definitely sounds similar to what I experienced with my M4. Since your M3 is still under warranty at that mileage, you're in a much better position than I was. When my TCU issues started, I also noticed it got progressively worse, started with those lazy shifts you mentioned and then developed into that horrible grinding noise. The fact that you're getting the same symptoms and warning light makes me pretty confident it's the TCU. I'd say definitely take it to the dealer while you're under warranty. Wish I'd caught mine earlier when I still had coverage! The repair itself isn't super complicated, but the parts and programming aren't cheap, learned that the hard way with my repair bill. One tip though, make sure to document everything, including when the warning light first appeared and how the symptoms progressed. When I had my issue, having all this information really helped speed up the diagnosis process. Keep us posted on what the dealer says. Always good to know how these issues get resolved, especially since the M3/M4 community is pretty tight-knit when it comes to sharing experiences with these kinds of problems.

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice! Really appreciate you sharing your experience in such detail. I've already started keeping notes about all the symptoms like you suggested, and I've even taken a few videos of the grinding noise and unresponsive paddle shifters to show the dealer. Just booked an appointment for next week. You've definitely made me feel better about the whole situation, knowing it's a fixable issue and that others have dealt with it too. The warranty coverage is a huge relief, guess I got lucky with the timing! Will update the forum once I get it sorted out. Really grateful for the M community being so helpful with these technical issues. You've saved me a lot of worry!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M4 last year (I have some experience working on cars, but TCU problems are beyond my skill level). The symptoms were almost identical, unresponsive paddles, harsh shifts, and eventually limp mode. Turned out the TCU was failing. Took it to my trusted independent BMW workshop, and they confirmed the control unit was defective. The repair involved replacing the TCU and reprogramming it to match the car's systems. Cost me around 1000 Euro, but it's been shifting perfectly since then. Before I can share more specific details about your case, could you share: Has your M3 displayed any warning lights? When did you first notice the shifting issues? Have you had any recent transmission service done? These details would help determine if you're facing the same problem I had with my M4.
