BMW M4 Brake Warning Light and Pedal Issues Alert

Help needed, BMW M4 brake system warning Hey all! I'm a bit concerned about my 2019 M4 (33.5k km). The brake warning light recently came on, and the car's showing a warning message on the display. What's really making me nervous is the weird feeling I'm getting from the brake pedal. I'm thinking it might be low brake fluid, but after a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, I'd like to hear about similar experiences before taking it in. Has anyone dealt with these symptoms? Any recommendations for handling this? Thanks!

Summary of the thread

A BMW M4 owner experienced a brake warning light and unusual brake pedal feel, suspecting low brake fluid as the cause. After consulting with others who had similar issues, it was suggested that worn brake pads and rotors could be the problem. Upon visiting a mechanic, it was confirmed that the brake pads were worn and there was a small leak in the brake fluid reservoir. The repairs resolved the warning light and pedal issues, and the owner now feels more confident in maintaining the vehicle's brake system.

I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW M3 last year. The brake warning light and strange pedal feedback turned out to be worn brake pads and rotors. The pedal was getting spongy and required more pressure than usual. My experience at the garage revealed that the front brake pads were down to about 2mm and the rotors had developed significant wear patterns. This is actually pretty serious since the braking system is crucial for safety. The technician showed me how the brake pad sensors had triggered the warning system, which is a built-in safety feature in BMWs. They had to replace both front rotors and pads to fix the issue. After the repair, the pedal feel returned to normal and the warning lights disappeared. With your M4's mileage, it's likely you're facing something similar. I'd suggest getting it checked soon, brake issues aren't something to postpone.

Thanks for sharing that, it's really helpful to hear about your experience. I actually got mine fixed last month and it sounds exactly like what I went through. The brake pedal feeling is definitely a giveaway, right? Can't remember if you mentioned the cost, how much did the whole repair set you back? Also, just curious, have you had any other brake-related issues pop up since getting it sorted? I'm a bit paranoid about keeping an eye on things now.

Hey there! Yeah, since seeing the mechanic last year, everything's been running perfectly with my M3's brakes. They fixed the low brake fluid level and sorted out those worn brakes, cost me 480 € in total. The pedal feel was definitely the big warning sign, you're spot on there! Haven't had a single brake issue since the repair, which is great news. The car feels solid and responsive, just like when it was new. I actually check the brake fluid level myself now and then, guess that experience made me more cautious too! But honestly, these M cars have pretty robust brake systems once they're properly maintained. Just keep an eye on those warning lights and don't ignore any changes in pedal feel, and you should be good to go.

Thanks everyone for your help! Just wanted to close this thread and share how it all turned out. After taking my M4 to a new mechanic, they diagnosed the issue pretty quickly. Turned out to be worn brake pads and a small leak in the brake fluid reservoir, that explained the warning light and that weird pedal feel. The repair job cost me about 550 bucks total, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The whole experience wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me exactly what was causing the problem. Been about a month now since the fix, and the brakes feel amazing, nice and firm, no more sponginess in the pedal. The warning lights are gone too. Funny enough, this whole thing has made me pay way more attention to my car's maintenance schedule. I've even learned how to check the brake fluid myself, something I probably should've known how to do before! Really appreciate all the advice here, definitely helped me feel more confident about getting it sorted.
