BMW M4 E-Brake Failure Leaves Owners Seeking Solutions

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW M4 (94,554 KM) is giving me headaches. The electronic parking brake stopped working completely, and several driver assistance features are down. There's a warning light on the dash, and the hill start assist is also dead. Given my previous bad experience with mechanics, I'm wondering if anyone here has dealt with similar electronic parking brake issues on their M4? What was the diagnosis and repair cost? Any recommendations for dealing with this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 BMW M4 owner experienced a complete failure of the electronic parking brake, along with several driver assistance features, including hill start assist. The issue was diagnosed as a faulty brake caliper motor, which required replacement of the entire brake caliper assembly. This problem affected multiple safety systems, and prompt repair was advised to prevent further complications. The owner was relieved to find a transparent mechanic and is awaiting the part replacement, with the repair cost estimated at 575 Euro.

Hi there! I had a very similar issue with my 2015 BMW M3 last year. The electronic parking brake completely failed, along with stability control and hill assist. After taking it to the garage, they diagnosed a faulty brake caliper motor on the rear right wheel. The motor was dead and needed complete replacement. The repair was quite serious since it affected multiple safety systems. They had to replace the entire brake caliper assembly because the electronic motor is integrated into it. It wasn't just a quick fix, they needed to bleed the brake system and recalibrate the parking brake module afterward. My advice is to get it checked soon. These electronic brake issues can affect other safety systems, as you're experiencing. Don't drive too long with those warning lights, mine started with just the parking brake warning, but it quickly cascaded to other systems.

Thanks for sharing this detailed info about your M3's brake problems! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other related issues pop up since getting it fixed? Been worried about potential knock-on problems with these electronic systems.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. After I got my M3 fixed, everything's been running perfectly smooth, no more brake issues whatsoever. The repair set me back about 505 Euro for the electric motor replacement in the brake caliper. Had to bite the bullet on that one, but it was worth every penny since the electronic parking brake and all other systems are working flawlessly now. I know it might sound steep, but considering how many systems were affected, I'd say it's better to get it sorted sooner rather than later. Since the fix, I haven't had a single warning light or any related problems pop up. The stability control, hill assist, everything's back to normal. I was also worried about potential ongoing issues, but it really was just that faulty brake caliper motor causing all the trouble. Let me know how it goes with yours, hope you get it sorted without too much hassle!

Thanks everyone for the advice! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my M4. I took it to the shop yesterday, and turns out it was indeed the brake caliper motor, just like mentioned. The mechanic was actually really transparent about the whole process, they showed me the faulty part and explained everything clearly. They quoted me slightly higher at 575 Euro for the full repair, but at least now I know what I'm dealing with. They're ordering the part today, and I should have my car back by next week. I was honestly relieved it wasn't something more serious! I really appreciate all the input, especially about getting it fixed quickly before it affects other systems. It's definitely not fun spending that much on repairs, but I guess that's just part of owning these cars. I'll post another update once I get it back from the shop to let you know how everything turned out. Thanks again for helping me avoid another bad mechanic experience. It really helped having some knowledge going into the shop this time!
