BMW M4 Fuel Sensor Failure Causing Multiple Issues?

Fault stored

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! My 2016 BMW M4 (50,160 km) is giving me some trouble and I'm a bit hesitant to visit the mechanic after a previous bad experience. The fuel gauge is stuck, check engine light is on, and the engine keeps stalling at idle. The diagnostic showed a fault code related to the fuel level sensor. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their M4? Was it actually the fuel level sensor, and if so, how much did the repair cost? Looking for recommendations since I want to avoid getting overcharged or misdiagnosed again. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I experienced similar issues with my 2019 BMW M2 Competition last year. The symptoms were identical, stuck fuel gauge, CEL, and stalling issues. Initially thought it was just the fuel sensor, but my mechanic found it was more complex. The main problem was a faulty fuel pump module that included the level sensor. The fuel pump was intermittently failing, causing the stalling. The fuse for the fuel pump circuit was also blown, which contributed to the gauge issues. It wasn't just a simple sensor replacement. This was definitely a serious repair that needed immediate attention, you don't want to risk getting stranded somewhere with a failed fuel pump. My advice would be to get it checked ASAP at a reputable BMW specialist. The stalling issue especially isn't something you should drive around with. Make sure they test the entire fuel delivery system, not just the sensor. These symptoms often point to a larger fuel system problem in these models. Good luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's super helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Good catch on checking the entire fuel system rather than just the sensor. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other fuel system problems since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Great news, I can actually help with an update since I got my M2 Competition fixed! After taking it to the mechanic, turned out I was actually pretty lucky. Unlike what I initially thought was a complex fuel pump issue, it was just the fuel level sensor that was acting up, plus a blown fuse that needed replacing. Total bill came to 52€ for the fuse replacement, and the sensor just needed a good clean and recalibration. Since getting it sorted, my fuel system's been running like a dream, no more stuck gauge, no check engine light, and the stalling's completely gone. Been about 8 months now without a single problem. Honestly, I'm pretty relieved it wasn't the full fuel pump replacement I was worried about initially! Really glad I could pass along my experience, sounds like you might be dealing with something similar. Definitely recommend getting it checked soon though, even if just for peace of mind. Mine turned out to be a much simpler fix than expected, and hopefully yours will be too! Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted!

Thanks a ton for the detailed follow-up! After your message, I finally got the courage to take my M4 to a mechanic yesterday. You won't believe it, it was also just a faulty sensor and some electrical issues! The mechanic cleaned the sensor, replaced a couple of fuses, and did a quick system reset. The whole thing cost way less than I was dreading. Such a relief! The car's running perfectly now, no more stalling, the gauge is working properly, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it. Really appreciate everyone's help here, especially your detailed experience. It definitely gave me the push I needed to get it sorted. Now I can finally enjoy driving my M4 again without constantly watching the fuel gauge or worrying about stalling!

Let our mechanics help you!
