BMW Throttle Issues: Jerking and Hard Start Problems

Hi all! My 2013 BMW 2 diesel has been acting up lately. The engine jerks, throttle response is sluggish, fuel consumption has increased, and it's struggling to start. I suspect the throttle valve might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had their throttle valve replaced? Would like to hear about your repair experiences and workshop solutions before I take it in. Let me know what you found out. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2011 BMW 1 Series diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced, my car was jerking, slow to respond, and drinking more fuel than usual. Turned out it wasn't the throttle valve but actually a defective accelerator pedal module. Got it fixed at my regular workshop, they diagnosed it quickly and replaced the module. Cost me around 205 Euro, all in. Since then, the car's been running smooth as butter. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Any warning lights on the dashboard? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? What's your mileage? This info would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Btw, if you want to avoid unnecessary costs, get it properly diagnosed first. Some workshops might rush to replace parts without proper testing.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car's at 98908 KM and just had its service last month. No warning lights showing up, but the jerking happens mostly when the engine's warm, especially during acceleration. The fuel consumption increase has been pretty noticeable too. Good point about getting a proper diagnosis first, definitely don't want to waste money replacing the wrong parts. Will get it checked out properly and update the thread once I know more. Really hoping it's just the accelerator module like in your case.

Hey again! Glad you came back with those details. Yeah, those symptoms you're describing, especially the jerking during warm acceleration, that's exactly what I experienced too. The fact that you're not seeing any warning lights is also similar to my situation back then. After my accelerator pedal module fix, I actually had the issue return about 6 months later. But this time, it was a clogged EGR valve causing similar symptoms. Had to get that cleaned out too. These diesels can be a bit finicky with the EGR system. Since your car's at about 99K km, it might be worth having them check both the accelerator module and the EGR while they're at it. My mechanic explained that these issues often show up around this mileage. The EGR cleaning was actually cheaper than the module replacement, only cost about 150 Euro including labor. Keep us posted on what you find out. Always good to share these experiences so others can learn from them. And like I mentioned before, make sure they do proper diagnostics first, saved me from replacing parts I didn't need to.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful info about the EGR valve, hadn't even considered that could be the issue. You're right about these diesel engines being finicky. I'll definitely ask them to check both the accelerator module and the EGR valve during diagnosis. The similar mileage point you mentioned makes a lot of sense too. This kind of info is exactly what I was hoping for when I posted here. I'll make sure to get back to the thread with what they find, could help someone else down the line with similar issues. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. Makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one who's dealt with this kind of problem. Will book it in for diagnosis tomorrow.
