BMW Washer Nozzles Freezing: Heater Malfunction Fix?

Hi everyone! My 2002 BMW 3 (gas engine, 56k km) has been giving me trouble with the windshield washer system. The nozzles keep freezing up in cold weather, and I noticed they look a bit burnt. There's also an error code stored in the system. Pretty sure it's the washer heater acting up, but I'm hesitant to take it to a mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience like and how much did it cost? Would really appreciate some insight before I choose where to get it fixed. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2005 BMW 5 Series last winter. The washer nozzle heating system was acting up, and I got those same burnt-looking nozzles. After scanning, it turned out the wiring harness connecting to the heater elements was damaged, causing intermittent connections and short circuits. Had it fixed at my mechanic, they had to replace the entire washer nozzle assembly and repair the wiring harness. Not a super serious issue, but definitely something you want to address before it potentially causes more electrical problems. The burnt appearance you're seeing is a clear sign of electrical issues. In my case, the fix took about 2-3 hours. Since you're getting an error code stored, it's most likely the same electrical problem I had. Don't put it off too long, faulty electrical connections can get worse over time. Based on my experience, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a BMW specialist who knows these systems well.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the washer system! That definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. Just to check, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working fine since they fixed it? Been a bit worried about other electrical gremlins popping up after getting it repaired.

Hey again! Just wanted to update you on my repair experience since you asked. Took it to the mechanic and you'll be glad to hear it was a much simpler fix than mine ended up being. They found a faulty cable connection to the heater component, nothing too major. Only cost me 95 € to sort out, which was a relief since I was expecting worse! The nozzles have been working perfectly since the repair, no more freezing issues and they're heating up properly in cold weather. I was also worried about other electrical problems showing up, but it's been smooth sailing. The burnt appearance on the nozzles was just from that bad connection, and once they fixed it, no other electrical gremlins have appeared. Honestly, it was a pretty straightforward repair. Much better than having to replace the entire assembly like I needed with my old 5 Series. Sometimes you get lucky, right? If you're still having the issue, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out, might be something equally simple for yours too.

Thanks for the update! I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday. The mechanic was really honest, turned out to be a loose ground wire that was causing the heater malfunction. Only paid €85 for the repair, which was way less than I expected. Funny enough, the mechanic showed me exactly what was wrong. The wire had worked itself loose over time, causing those burnt marks I noticed. He cleaned up the connection points, secured everything properly, and ran a few tests to make sure it was working right. Totally different from my last mechanic experience! The washer system's working perfectly now, tested it this morning and the nozzles are heating up just like they should. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. You were right about getting it checked out quickly, could've caused bigger problems if I'd waited. Thanks again for helping me make the decision to get it fixed. Feeling much better about driving in cold weather now!
