BMW X1 2016 problems again and again the starter does not work

Hello everyone, my BMW X1 Diesel, built in 2016, has recently started having problems starting. The symptoms are longer cold start times, refusal to start, strange engine noises, weak battery when starting, dimmed or flickering lights and a warning light in the speedometer. I suspect it could be due to "engine may not start". Has anyone had similar experiences and can tell me how you solved the problem? What tips did your garage give you? Thank you!

Summary of the thread

A 2016 BMW X1 is having starting problems, including longer cold starts, failure to start, strange engine noises, a weak battery, dim lights, and a warning light. The fault memory shows a problem with the glow plug control unit, even though the battery was recently replaced. A similar issue in another BMW model was fixed by repairing a faulty sensor. It is recommended to check and possibly replace the glow plug control unit or a sensor; consult a workshop if the problem continues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my BMW X3 Diesel, year 2018. I only have a little experience in screwing, but I was able to find out that the error occurred in my case due to an electronic follow-up error ("Error results from a follow-up error of the vehicle electrics"). I then went to my garage, where they fixed the fault free of charge. The diagnosis showed that it was a faulty sensor that was causing the starting problems. After that, everything ran smoothly again. It would be helpful if you could provide more information about your X1. Have you already read out a fault memory or carried out further diagnostics? Then I might be able to give you more tips. Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your answer! My X1 has 189543 km on it and I recently had the fault memory read out. It showed a problem with the glow control unit. The battery has already been replaced, but the problem persists. Could it perhaps also be due to a sensor? I'm not sure whether I should go straight to the workshop or whether I can check something myself. Thanks again and best regards!

Hey again, thanks for the additional information. The fact that the glow control unit is displayed as an error can be an important clue. In my X3, it was actually a sensor that had to be replaced. If you have already replaced the battery and the error is displayed with the glow control unit, this could definitely be a clue. A faulty glow control unit can cause various symptoms, especially with cold starts. This could also explain the long starting times and the warning light. I would recommend that you also check the sensor and replace it if necessary. If you are sure and feel confident, you could test or replace the glow control unit yourself. Otherwise, I would really advise you to go to the workshop before you buy any other accessories. This may save you time and nerves. Hope this helps you! Good luck and keep us up to date. Best regards!

Thank you for your help! I'll probably check the glow control unit first and see if that fixes the problem. If not, I'll probably have no choice but to take it to the garage. I'll definitely report back on how things go. Best regards and thanks again!
