Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! That's really helpful and sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Good to know it wasn't anything more serious than the backup battery. A bit relieved now, honestly. Mind if I ask how much you ended up paying for the whole thing? Also, have you had any other alarm-related issues since getting it fixed? Looking up BMW specialists right now based on your advice. You're right, better get this sorted soon rather than leaving the car without proper security.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update on my BMW alarm situation. The repair cost me 330 € total, it was indeed just the backup battery that needed replacing due to age. Since getting it fixed at the specialist, I'm happy to report that the "Additional battery alarm system defective" warning has completely disappeared and everything's working perfectly. Not a single alarm-related issue since then. Honestly, it was worth every penny for the peace of mind. The alarm arms properly now when I lock the car, and all the security features are back to normal. Looking back, I probably should have done it sooner, but you know how it goes with car repairs, sometimes you put them off longer than you should! Good call on looking up BMW specialists. That's definitely the way to go. A proper diagnostic and repair makes all the difference compared to general mechanics who might not be as familiar with BMW's specific systems. Let me know how it goes with your repair. Always interested to hear if others have similar experiences with their BMWs!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you all! Found a great BMW specialist who totally knew his stuff. The whole experience was way better than my last mechanic visit. Turns out you were spot on, it was the backup battery. Repair cost was pretty close to what you mentioned, around 350 € including labor. They had it done in about an hour, and the alarm system's working perfectly now. The specialist also showed me exactly what they were replacing and explained why these batteries tend to fail after several years. Really appreciated their transparency, definitely sticking with them for future repairs. Thanks again for pushing me to find a BMW specialist. The peace of mind knowing my car's security system is working properly again is totally worth it. Guess sometimes you need a little nudge to stop putting off these repairs!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 3 Series last winter. The backup battery for the alarm system was completely dead after years of use. Had it checked at the garage and they confirmed it wasn't just a simple discharge but the battery had degraded beyond recovery. They ran a full diagnostic which showed the backup battery was the culprit, no other electrical issues found. The replacement itself wasn't complicated, took them about an hour to complete the job. Once replaced, the alarm system worked perfectly again. It's not really a serious problem, just a wear and tear item that needs replacing occasionally, like many other components. My suggestion would be to get it checked soon though, as a non-functioning alarm system leaves your car vulnerable. I'd recommend finding a mechanic who specializes in BMW or at least European cars, they'll have the right diagnostic tools and know exactly where these backup batteries are located in different models.
