BMW X1 Climate Control System Complete Failure Help

Hi there! My 2016 BMW X1 is having major issues with temperature-related functions. The temp display is dead, climate control isn't working, and several heating elements (including mirror heating) are non-functional. The system's throwing an error code too. I suspect it might be the external temperature sensor acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and gotten them fixed? Interested in hearing about repair solutions and workshop experiences.

I've got some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW X3, and my owns a 3-series too. This sounds really familiar! I dealt with exactly these symptoms, dead temp display, climate control issues, the works. Turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection near the temp sensor. The workshop found that moisture had gotten in and corroded the plug connection. The fix was pretty straightforward, they replaced the connector and cables, and everything started working perfectly again. Cost me about 95 Euro total, which wasn't too bad considering all the symptoms it was causing. Before I can give more specific advice though, could you share: Has the check engine light come on? Which error code are you getting? Did these issues start suddenly or gradually? Knowing these details would help confirm if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, these symptoms just showed up out of nowhere last week. My check engine light started flashing, and I'm getting error code P0116. Just had my service done at 65315 KM, so this caught me off guard. The air con and heating were working perfectly fine before this. The wiring connection issue you mentioned makes sense, we've had some really bad weather lately. Will definitely get the sensor connections checked out. Did the temp display on your dash come back immediately after they fixed the wiring, or did they need to reset something?

Hey again! Yeah, after seeing your error code P0116, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I experienced with my X3. When they fixed my wiring issue, the temp display didn't come back right away, they had to clear the error codes and reset the system. The mechanic told me this is pretty standard procedure for BMW climate control systems. After the reset, everything started working perfectly again. But here's something interesting, since you mentioned your recent service, you might want to have them check if anything was accidentally disturbed during that work. On my 's BMW, something similar happened right after a routine service. Turned out one of the connectors wasn't properly seated after they finished working in that area. The sudden onset of your problems definitely matches my experience too. Mine literally went from perfect to completely dead in one rainy morning. The flashing check engine light is exactly what I saw as well. Just keep in mind though, moisture damage can sometimes affect other components too, so while the wiring fix worked for me, make sure they do a thorough check of the entire system. Would love to hear how it turns out after you get it checked!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful to know about needing a system reset, I'll definitely mention that to the mechanic. You make a really good point about the recent service too. I'm actually starting to wonder if that could be the culprit, since the timing does line up pretty closely. I've booked it in for tomorrow morning, and I'll make sure they check both the wiring connections and anything that might have been disturbed during the service. Really hoping it's as straightforward as your fix was! The fact that your symptoms were so similar and got resolved with a relatively simple repair is making me feel a lot more optimistic about this. I'll update you once I get it sorted. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful in understanding what I might be dealing with!
