Thanks for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now. The similarities are uncanny, especially with the cold starts and warning light. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair job? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Just want to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if this sorted everything out completely. Cheers!

Hey, glad I could help! After seeing your follow-up, I wanted to let you know that I paid 440€ for the complete glow plug replacement job on my X3. And I've got great news to share, since getting it fixed, my car's been running like a dream! No more cold start issues or warning lights at all. The mechanic did a thorough job replacing all four plugs, and honestly, it was money well spent. The starter motor is also much happier now, no more of that struggling sound during cold mornings. It just fires right up, first time, every time. It's such a relief not having to worry about whether the car will start properly anymore. Trust me, getting all the plugs done at once was definitely the right call. Haven't had a single related issue pop up since the repair, and it's been more than a year now. The battery life is back to normal too, which is an added bonus. If you're still on the fence about getting it done, I'd say go for it, it's totally worth sorting it out properly.

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you! Finally took your advice and had all the glow plugs replaced. The whole experience was way better than my last mechanic visit. Found a really good BMW specialist who diagnosed it right away. They found three bad glow plugs and some nasty carbon buildup, just like you mentioned. Bill came to around 500 with parts and labor, which wasn't as bad as I feared. The best part? My car starts like a charm now, no more crossing fingers on cold mornings! Funny thing is, the mechanic showed me the old plugs, and they were completely shot. Can't believe I waited this long to get it fixed. The battery's not struggling anymore either. Thanks again for pushing me to get it sorted, you were spot on about everything. Saved me from potentially bigger problems down the road! Think I've finally found a reliable mechanic too, which is a huge bonus. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me make the right call!

Had the same issue with my 2013 BMW X3 20d last winter. The glow plug warning stayed on and cold starts became a real pain. Got it checked, turned out two glow plugs were defective and one had completely failed. The mechanic also found carbon buildup around the plugs, which made things worse. The fix needed all four glow plugs replaced (they recommend doing all of them at once), plus cleaning of the glow plug wells and harness inspection. It wasn't a quick fix but definitely not the worst repair I've faced. The car's been starting perfectly since then, even in cold weather. From my experience, failing glow plugs can damage other components if left too long, especially the starter motor from those hard starts. Get it sorted soon, the symptoms you're describing are exactly what I dealt with.
