BMW X1 Diesel Running Rough, Intake Manifold Issues?

Hi all! My 2017 BMW X1 diesel (49k km) is giving me headaches after a disappointing experience with my previous mechanic. The engine's running rough with noticeable power loss, jerks during acceleration, and makes this concerning hissing sound. I'm burning more fuel than usual and the exhaust values are off. I suspect it might be the intake manifold flap, but I'd love to hear if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms. What was your diagnosis and did you find a reliable mechanic who actually fixed it? Thanks in advance

Summary of the thread

A 2017 BMW X1 diesel is experiencing rough running, power loss, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and a hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the intake manifold flap, possibly due to a failed actuator causing the flaps to stick. A similar case with a BMW X3 involved replacing the entire intake manifold assembly, which resolved the issues. The suggested solution is to have the intake manifold system checked and repaired by a knowledgeable mechanic to prevent further engine damage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I had almost identical issues with my 2014 BMW X3 20d last year. The symptoms matched yours perfectly, rough idle, power drops, and that distinct hissing noise. My car was also guzzling fuel like crazy. Turned out it was indeed the intake manifold control flap system. The actuator had failed, causing the flaps to stick in one position. This messed with the air-fuel mixture and engine performance. The diagnosis was confirmed when they checked the error codes. The repair involved replacing the entire intake manifold assembly since the flap mechanism is integrated. It was a serious job that took about 6 hours in the shop. While it wasn't cheap, it was absolutely necessary to prevent further engine damage. After the fix, the difference was night and day, smooth power delivery, normal fuel consumption, and no more hissing. If you're experiencing these symptoms, I wouldn't wait too long to get it checked out, as it can lead to bigger issues. Hope this helps with your decision.

Hey, thanks so much for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with on my X1. Really helpful to know the actuator was the culprit in your case. Would you mind telling me how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, curious if you've had any related issues pop up since the fix? Just want to be prepared for what I might be facing. Thanks again for the advice, definitely getting this checked out soon!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up and share that I got my X3 fixed by a proper mechanic last month, what a relief! The whole intake manifold flap control issue was sorted, and they replaced that faulty switch. Total bill came to 465€, which honestly wasn't as bad as I feared. Since the repair, my car's running like a dream, no more weird hissing, power's back to normal, and fuel consumption is way better. Haven't had a single problem since. Actually feels like I'm driving a different car now! The mechanic mentioned it was pretty common for these models, so you're definitely not alone. The repair job was worth every penny, saved me from potential bigger problems down the road. Just make sure you get a mechanic who knows BMWs inside out. Let me know how it goes with yours, always good to hear how these things work out!

Thanks for the update! I actually just got my X1 back from the shop yesterday, and what a difference! Found a great mechanic who diagnosed it right away, exactly what you described with the intake manifold flap. Cost me about the same as yours. Funny story though, when I went to pick up my car, the mechanic was running behind because he was fixing another BMW with the same issue! He showed me the old parts and explained everything. Really appreciated his transparency. The car's running perfectly now, no more hissing, jerking, or power loss. Even my fuel consumption has gone back to normal. Such a relief to have this sorted! Really grateful for your advice, it helped me push for the right fix instead of wasting time with temporary solutions. Thanks again for helping me dodge what could've been a much bigger headache!
