BMW X1 Hybrid Jerking & Stalling: Ignition Coil Issue?
Summary of the thread
The 2023 BMW X1 Hybrid is experiencing jerking during acceleration, rough idling, occasional stalling, and a sluggish engine response. The check engine light is also on. The suspected cause is an issue with the ignition coil. A similar problem was resolved by cleaning and securing loose and partially corroded cable connections to the ignition module and replacing a faulty plug. It was also suggested to check the spark plugs, as they could contribute to the problem. The recommendation is to have the car checked by a specialist to prevent further complications.

Thanks for the detailed response! My X1 has 155643 KM on it and had its last service about 3 weeks ago. The issues started showing up right after a cold morning start last week. Haven't noticed any particular pattern with engine temperature yet, but it seems slightly worse during the initial acceleration. I'll definitely get those ignition connections checked out based on your experience. Better to catch it early before it turns into something bigger. Was your repair done at a BMW dealer or independent workshop?

Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about your X1. Yeah, the timing of your symptoms does sound very similar to what I experienced. In my case, I actually went with an independent workshop that specializes in BMW hybrids, they had good reviews and charged way less than the dealer. Just to add to my previous response, after I got those connections fixed, I did notice another small issue about a month later where the jerking came back briefly. Turned out there was also a small issue with the spark plugs that needed attention. The workshop replaced those too, and since then (about 8 months now), my X3 has been running perfectly smooth. Given that your issues started after a cold morning, and considering your mileage, I'd definitely recommend having them check both the connections and the spark plugs while they're at it. Mine had about 140000 KM when these issues showed up, so we're in the same ballpark mileage-wise. Let me know what you find out when you get it checked. Always interested to hear if others are dealing with similar issues on these models. These hybrids can be a bit tricky sometimes!

Thanks so much for sharing your follow-up experience! That's really helpful to know about the spark plugs too, I'll definitely have them check both issues. I actually know a well-reviewed independent BMW specialist nearby, so I'll give them a call tomorrow morning. Better to tackle this now than wait for it to get worse. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. Will update you once I get it checked out and sorted. Thanks again for all the help!

Hello I have misfiring on the 2nd cylinder I have already replaced coils and plugs, I am afraid that it is the injectors as they tend to fail with this engine

It's possible that the injector for the 2nd cylinder might be causing the misfire. Before replacing the injector, try swapping it with another cylinder to see if the misfire follows the injector. This can help confirm if the injector is the issue. If the misfire moves, then the injector is likely faulty. If not, there might be another underlying issue. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!

Hello, I have a 335i n54 and it's giving me a cylinder 2 combustion fault. I've changed the coils, spark plugs, and injector, and it's still the same, with shaking at idle. What could it be?

Check for any vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and hoses, as these can cause rough idling and misfires. A smoke test can help identify any leaks. If no leaks are found, consider checking the compression in cylinder 2 to rule out mechanical issues. Let me know if you need further assistance!

Hi there! I've got some experience working on cars, and your symptoms sound very familiar. I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X3 Hybrid last year. The symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing. After checking with my regular workshop, they found that the cable connections to the ignition module were loose and partially corroded. They cleaned the connections, secured them properly, and replaced a faulty plug. Total cost was around 95 Euro, and it fixed the problem completely. I was pretty relieved it wasn't something more serious with my iX3! Could you share some additional info about your X1? Like the mileage, when these symptoms started, and if you've noticed any pattern (does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm)? This would help me determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Just to be safe, I'd recommend getting it checked soon since these symptoms can sometimes indicate other problems if left unchecked.
