BMW X1 Jerking Issues: Power Loss & Engine Troubles

Thanks for your input! Just to clarify, my X1 is completely stock without any modifications or tuning. Last service was done 2 months ago at 111900 KM. The fault code showing is P0300 (unusual/multiple cylinder misfire detected). Been driving it very carefully since these symptoms started. Wondering if this could be related to spark plugs or fuel injectors? The jerking is most noticeable when accelerating from a stop.

Ah, thanks for clarifying about the P0300 code! Actually, I had almost the exact same situation with my X3 before the chip tuning incident I mentioned earlier. When I got the P0300 code, it turned out to be worn spark plugs, they were totally shot after about 110,000 KM. The symptoms were identical to what you're describing, especially that jerking during acceleration. I initially thought it might be the fuel injectors too, but my mechanic checked them and they were fine. Changed all the spark plugs and the coil packs while we were at it (since they tend to fail around the same time in these engines), and it sorted everything out. This kind of misfire issue is pretty common in our engine family. The total repair cost for me was around 400-500 Euro including parts and labor. Definitely worth getting it checked soon though, driving with misfires for too long can damage the catalytic converter, and that's a much more expensive fix. Quick tip from my experience, make sure to use the OEM spark plugs. I tried aftermarket ones once and regretted it. The BMW-spec ones might cost a bit more, but they last longer and run better in these engines. Let me know how it goes! Pretty sure this will sort out your issue since the symptoms match exactly what I dealt with.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! That's really helpful, especially the tip about sticking with OEM spark plugs. Your experience sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with, and it's actually a relief to hear it might just be spark plugs rather than something more serious. The mileage on mine is pretty close to when yours failed too. I'll definitely get it checked out this week, don't want to risk damaging the catalytic converter. Will ask specifically about the spark plugs and coil packs when I take it in. The cost you mentioned seems reasonable for the peace of mind. I'll update once I get it sorted out. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice!

Hi there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X3 last year, same symptoms you're describing with the jerking and power loss. Turned out the problem was caused by a third-party chip tuning that wasn't properly installed. Got it fixed at a workshop that specializes in BMWs. They had to reset the ECU and reinstall the original factory programming. The whole thing cost me around 180 Euro but solved all the issues completely. Before I share more specifics: Could you tell me if you've had any recent modifications done to your X1? Also, what fault code is showing up? This would help me give you more relevant advice based on my experience. The 2-series is also known to have similar issues when incorrectly tuned, so I've seen this quite a bit in our BMW community.
