BMW X1 Power Windows Dead: Regulator Issue Help Needed

Hey there! Need advice about my 2009 BMW X1 (gas, 133,760 km). My power windows stopped working completely and I've got an error code showing a window regulator initialization failure. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar window issues on their X1? What was the actual problem and were the repair costs reasonable? Thanks in advance for any input!

Summary of the thread

A 2009 BMW X1 experienced a complete failure of the power windows, accompanied by an error code indicating a window regulator initialization failure. The initial concern was a potential issue with the window regulators. However, a similar case with a BMW X3 revealed that a weak battery could cause such electrical issues. Replacing and coding a new battery resolved the problem, restoring window functionality. The solution was simpler and more cost-effective than initially feared, highlighting the importance of checking the battery before considering more complex repairs.

Hey! I had a similar issue with my 2012 BMW X3 last summer. The power windows completely died, and I got the same initialization error code. Initially thought it was the regulators, but turned out the main culprit was actually a weak battery. When the battery starts failing, BMWs can show all sorts of weird electrical issues, including power window problems. Had it checked at the garage, and after replacing the battery, they did a computer reset to reinitialize all the electrical systems. The windows started working perfectly after that. It wasn't a super serious repair, just needed to make sure the new battery was properly coded to the car's computer system, that's pretty standard for BMWs. If your battery is original or hasn't been changed in the past 4-5 years, I'd definitely get that checked first before diving into window regulator replacements. Much simpler fix overall.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really interesting about the battery being the root cause, definitely less scary than I was thinking. My windows are still acting up but I haven't gotten around to fixing them yet. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the battery replacement and coding? Also curious if you've had any other electrical quirks pop up since then? Been worried about potential domino effects with these electrical issues.

Hey again! Glad to help with the follow-up. Yep, I got everything sorted at the mechanic, the window regulator initialization issue is completely fixed now. The total bill came to 290 € for the battery replacement, which included the coding work they had to do to sync it with the car's computer system. Pretty standard stuff for these BMWs really. Since getting the new battery, everything's been running smoothly, no more electrical gremlins popping up! My windows work perfectly now, and I haven't seen any other weird issues. These cars can act pretty strange when the battery starts getting weak, but once you sort that out, they usually go back to normal. Honestly, it was such a relief that it wasn't something more complicated. These BMW electrical systems can be tricky, but sometimes the fix is simpler than you'd expect. If you're still having issues with yours, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later, might save you from bigger headaches down the road.

What a relief this turned out to be! Finally got around to taking my X1 to a new mechanic yesterday. Just like your case, it was indeed a battery issue! Mine was even cheaper, got the battery replaced and coded for 250 €. The mechanic was super honest, explaining everything clearly without trying to upsell me on unnecessary repairs. It's been such a different experience from my last mechanic, who tried convincing me I needed to replace all window regulators for a crazy amount. The windows are working perfectly now, and the error code's gone. The car feels more responsive overall too, which I guess makes sense since it was running on a weak battery before. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction with your advice, saved me both money and stress! Definitely keeping this mechanic for future repairs. Lesson learned: sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one, especially with these fancy electrical systems.
