Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine also happened quite suddenly, was perfectly fine one morning and then everything just stopped working on my drive home. My car has done 40962 KM and just had its service last month. I'm getting the same symptoms you mentioned. Haven't noticed any unusual sounds from the steering wheel, it just feels completely dead electronically. Unfortunately, I don't have the specific error codes handy, but will try to get them read. Your clock spring issue seems very similar to what I'm experiencing. Really helpful to know it might be a relatively straightforward fix. I'll definitely mention the clock spring possibility when I take it to the workshop. Thanks for the tip!

Hey again! Happy to help further with your BMW issue. Yep, from what you're describing, it sounds even more like the clock spring problem I had. The sudden failure and similar mileage really matches my experience. Just to share a bit more detail from my case, when my workshop opened up the steering wheel, the clock spring was clearly worn out. They told me it's actually quite common on these models, especially around the 40-50k km mark. The good news is that since you just had a service, they might even cover some of the repair cost under warranty (mine didn't because I was overdue for service). The repair itself only took about an hour and a half. Quick tip though, don't try to mess with the steering wheel yourself if you're thinking about it. I know it's tempting, but because of the airbag, it's really best left to the professionals. Made that mistake on my old 1 Series and regretted it! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Always curious to hear if these cases turn out similar to mine.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really reassuring to hear it's a common issue around this mileage. I definitely won't attempt any DIY fixes, good warning about the airbag, wasn't planning to mess with it but now I'll make extra sure not to! I've actually just called my service center and booked it in for next week. Mentioned the clock spring issue you experienced and they seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. They said they'll check if any of it might be covered under the recent service warranty. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info, it's exactly what I was hoping for when I posted my question. Makes me feel much better knowing it's likely a straightforward fix rather than some major electrical problem. Will definitely update you once I get it sorted!

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars and had a very similar issue with my 2011 BMW X3 last year (also had a 1 Series before). The symptoms were exactly like yours, steering wheel controls dead, airbag light on, and driver assistance going crazy. Turned out it was just a faulty cable connection in the steering wheel. Had it fixed at my regular workshop, they replaced the spiral contact/clock spring assembly and everything went back to normal. Cost me around 95 Euro for the whole job. Before you head to a workshop though, could you share: Any specific error codes you're getting? Did this happen suddenly or gradually? Does turning the steering wheel make any unusual sounds? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had. These steering wheel issues can be tricky on BMWs, but usually fixable without breaking the bank.
