BMW X2 Cold Start Issues, Engine Warning Light Mystery

Thanks for the detailed response! My battery is actually fairly new (replaced 8 months ago), and I'm not getting any clicking sounds. The headlights seem normal too. What's worrying me is that the problem seems worse than just a battery issue. Had my last service at 43207 KM, and everything was fine then. I had the BMW dealer check the codes last week, and they mentioned something about the fuel injection system, but I wanted to get some real-world feedback before committing to their expensive repair quote. Their diagnostic was pretty vague, and I've heard these issues could be related to sensors rather than actual mechanical problems. Has anyone else had similar experiences with the fuel system?

Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about your X2. Yeah, I totally get your concern about the dealer's vague diagnosis. You know what? When you mentioned the fuel injection system, it reminded me of what happened with my X1 after I fixed those battery connections I told you about. The starting problems actually came back a few months later, and it turned out to be a faulty fuel pressure sensor AND a bad fuel pump. The symptoms were super similar, tough starts, especially in cold weather, and the engine control light kept coming on. My mechanic found that the fuel pressure wasn't building up properly, which explains why it was worse in cold weather. Cost me about 780 Euro for the whole repair, but it was worth it, car's been running like a charm since then. Since your battery's new and you're not having electrical symptoms, I'm leaning towards agreeing with the dealer about the fuel system. These BMWs can be tricky with their sensors though, sometimes they throw codes that make it seem worse than it is. Have you noticed any slight hesitation when accelerating? That's another tell-tale sign I experienced. Maybe get a second opinion from an independent BMW specialist? They might give you a more detailed diagnosis and probably a better price than the dealer.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Yes, now that you mention it, I have noticed some hesitation during acceleration, especially when merging onto highways. Your fuel pump situation sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing. It's really helpful to hear about a real case with similar symptoms, makes me feel better about tackling this issue. I think I'll take your advice and get a second opinion from an independent specialist before moving forward. The dealer's quote was pretty steep, and hearing that you got it fixed for around 780 Euro gives me a better idea of what to expect. I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything in detail. I'll make sure to update this thread once I get it sorted out, might help someone else with the same problem in the future!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I dealt with a very similar issue with my 2016 BMW X1 last winter. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced. After struggling with unusual starting issues and that annoying engine light, I took it to my trusted workshop. Turned out the battery cable connections were corroded and loose, not making proper contact. The fix was pretty straightforward and cost me 155 Euro for cleaning, tightening, and replacing some worn connectors. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you tell us: How old is your battery? Are you getting any clicking sounds when trying to start? Have you noticed any dimming headlights? I also own a BMW X3, and these models can be sensitive to electrical issues. Let me know these details, and I might be able to help you narrow it down further.
