Thanks for sharing your experience! That wiring harness issue sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Would you mind telling me how much the repair ended up costing you? Also curious if you've had any other cooling-related problems since getting it fixed. I'm trying to budget for this and want to make sure I'm prepared in case something else pops up. I've been calling around to BMW specialists in the area, but the quotes are all over the place.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up and share that my wiring harness problem got completely fixed. Took my X1 to a BMW certified specialist and it turned out to be much simpler (and cheaper!) than expected. They found a faulty cable connection to the control unit that was causing all those communication errors. Only cost me 95€ to repair the connection, what a relief compared to what I was expecting! Since getting it fixed, the cooling system's been working perfectly, no more overheating, no limp mode, and definitely no more warning lights lighting up my dash like a Christmas tree! I'd really recommend getting it looked at by a proper BMW specialist. Those varying quotes you're getting are probably because some shops are assuming worst-case scenarios without actually diagnosing the issue. Just make sure whoever you choose has experience with BMW electrical systems. The right diagnosis makes all the difference, as you can see from my case, what sounds like a major problem might have a relatively simple fix.

Thanks so much for the update! You won't believe it, but I finally got my car fixed too. After your advice, I found a certified BMW specialist who really knew their stuff. Had to wait a few days for an appointment, but it was worth it. Funny enough, my problem was a bit different than yours. The mechanic found a cracked coolant pipe that was causing the leaks, and it had damaged some nearby wiring. They replaced the pipe and repaired the wiring. Total bill came to about 400 bucks, not cheap, but way better than the thousands some places were quoting me! Been driving it for a week now and everything's running perfectly. No more puddles under the car, no warning lights, and the engine temperature's staying exactly where it should. You were absolutely right about finding someone who specializes in BMWs, they diagnosed it in under an hour. Really appreciate your help with this. It's such a relief to have my car running normally again without breaking the bank!

I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X1 last summer. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, overheating, limp mode, and coolant leaks. Turned out the wiring harness connecting to the cooling system control module was damaged, causing communication errors and improper coolant flow control. The mechanic found corroded terminals and a partially melted connector, which was pretty serious as it could've led to complete engine failure. They had to replace the entire wiring harness and reprogram the control module. The repair took about 2 days. Since the cooling system is critical, I'd suggest finding a certified BMW specialist rather than a general mechanic. Check for certified techs who specialize in BMW electrical systems. These symptoms aren't something you want to ignore or have fixed by someone without proper diagnostic tools.
